WWE: 5 Most Hated Stars of the Current Era

Cosmas ManyuraJun 7, 2018

No one enjoys getting booed by a crowd. And whenever it happens, whoever is on the receiving end has a reason to worry.

Well, that is not exactly the case in professional wrestling.

In the grappling world, getting jeered by fans is as good as getting cheered—especially if the character one plays is that of a villain/heel. Getting a reaction from fans is all that matters—and the louder, the better.

In today's era, the following five WWE stars are the masters at attracting a negative crowd response.

Michael Cole

Commentator Michael Cole is arguably the most hated personality in WWE today. And while fans' heat on Cole is in most part due to the heel character he plays on commentary, fans' and Cole's hate story is somewhat personal, too.

The former broadcast journalist joined WWE in 1997, becoming a backstage interviewer. Cole would go on to become the play-by-play announcer for SmackDown, a position he held until 2008, when he was drafted to Raw.

Cole's heel turn came in early 2010, after he began supporting the heel Miz over the then-face Daniel Bryan in the two wrestlers' mini-feud. He was later made the spokesman for the Anonymous RAW General Manager, adopting the annoying catchphrase, "Can I have your attention... and I quote."

Cole has been a hated figure since then, and despite being an above-average commentator, in my opinion, most fans would rather have anyone else do commentary, instead of Cole. Most people just can't stand him.

His continued bashing of popular and talented Superstars is perhaps the most annoying aspect of Cole's character.

John Laurinaitis

The Vice President of Talent Relations and Interim General Manager of Monday Night RAW gets heavily booed whenever he makes an appearance at a WWE event.

"Mr. Excitement" joined WWE in 2001, initially working as a road agent before becoming Vice President of Talent Relations in 2004. He would later win a promotion to the role of Executive Vice President of Talent Relations, a position he still holds.

It was, however, not until July 2011 that Laurinaitis began his transformation into an on-air authority figure. His first appearance was at the Money in the Bank pay-per-vew, when he (under instructions from Mr. McMahon) attempted "screwing" CM Punk.

He was named Interim RAW General Manger in October and despite a sticky start, Laurinaitis has fit into his heel authority-figure role perfectly.

John Cena

Despite his face status, a large portion of the fans' reaction to Cena is negative.

Mr. Hustle, Loyalty and Respect's haters are predominantly adult males, who consider Cena the spearhead of the unpopular TV-PG Era. The West Newbury native, however, still remains a popular figure among children and adult females.

Since his debut in June 2002, Cena has played both face and heel roles. He, however, has stayed face since he made the turn in 2004.

Despite the fans' plea for a Cena heel turn, WWE officials are not willing to take an unnecessary risk, as "The Champ" is a top merchandise-seller and a marketing attraction.

Vickie Guerrero

Vickie's signature "excuse me" catchphrase is a massive heat-drawer. Whenever she utters her unpopular catchphrase, the fans' booing only gets louder.

Vickie began making WWE TV appearances in 2005, being deployed as a mediator with her real-life husband Eddie and family friend Rey Mysterio.

Following Eddie's death in December 2005, she returned in mid-2006, this time as the mediator in the Chavo Guerrero vs. Rey Mysterio feud.

In 2007, she made her heel turn, siding with then-heel Edge.

Currently managing Dolph Ziggler and Jack Swagger, Vickie continues to play her heel role. Her villainous antics include constant screaming at ringside whenever her "client" is in action.

Daniel Bryan

The reigning World Heavyweight Champion is not the most likeable Superstar these days. Since joining WWE in 2010 as one of the NXT Season 1 rookies, Bryan played the role of a fan favorite.

It wasn't until December 2011 that Bryan made the turn to the dark side, after capturing his first world title. He gradually developed an arrogant gimmick, often exaggerating his post-match celebrations and showering praises on his vegan lifestyle.

While fans still consider Bryan one of the world's best technical wrestlers, they cant help booing Bryan's heel antics and personality. He is arguably WWE's top heel.
