Report: Biggest Spenders in Men's CBB 🤑
Here are three Saturday Round of 32 games that, while they may not match the craziness of what happened on Friday, have immense upset potential.
No. 8 Kansas State vs. No. 1 Syracuse
After trailing for much of their Round of 64 game against the 16-seeded UNC-Asheville Bulldogs, the No. 1 Syracuse Orange will have a much tougher test against the No. 8 Kansas State Wildcats.
Kansas State won a hard-fought battle against the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles in the second round and will certainly be prepared for the Orange. It is well documented that Syracuse will be without center Fab Melo for the duration of the tourney due to eligibility issues, so it leaves the Orange vulnerable.
UNC-Asheville took advantage of that vulnerability for much of its game against 'Cuse, but Kansas State is even more well equipped to do so. The key to a possible Wildcats upset will be junior guard Rodney McGruder. He shot the lights-out against Southern Miss as he poured in 30 points and he will need a similar effort on Saturday.
Syracuse's zone defense will give him the opportunity to pull the trigger, and if he's accurate then the Orange could be in deep trouble.
No. 12 VCU vs. No. 4 Indiana
The No. 12 VCU Rams have an entirely different team than the one that went to the Final Four last season, but that didn't stop them from continuing their winning ways in the NCAA Tournament as they knocked off the No. 5 Wichita State Shockers in the Round of 64.
Head coach Shaka Smart led the way, while veteran forward Bradford Burgess hit a huge shot down the stretch. While VCU dictated the pace on Thursday, they will face an Indiana Hoosiers team on Saturday that has no issue running up and down the floor.
No. 4 Indiana was impressive in its second-round rout of New Mexico St., and it seems poised to continue rolling. The Hoosiers were the only team to beat Kentucky this season before Vanderbilt's triumph in the SEC title game, so the Hoosiers have proven that they can win some big games.
Cody Zeller and Jordan Hulls will have to come up huge once again for Indiana on Saturday, but VCU is simply a magical team that continually defies the odds, so you can never count the Rams out.
No. 7 Gonzaga vs. No. 2 Ohio State
The No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes were impressive as their depth was evident in a blowout win over Loyola (Md.) in the Round of 64, but the level of competition will rise in a hurry as they will have to take on the No. 7 Gonzaga Bulldogs, who operated like a well-oiled machine in an easy win over West Virginia in the second round.
Deshaun Thomas paced the Buckeyes with 31 points against Loyola, while other top players like Jared Sullinger and William Buford merely had supporting roles. That is a true testament to how much skill the Buckeyes have.
At the same time, though, Gonzaga is one of the deeper teams in the nation as well. Not only do the Bulldogs have great veterans like Elias Harris and Robert Sacre, but freshman point guard Kevin Pangos is already one of the best in the nation.
The Zags have no issue running an up-tempo style, and if they can establish a brisk pace, then perhaps they can get Ohio State back on its heels. The Buckeyes have all the components to be a title team, but Gonzaga won't go down quietly.
