Lehigh vs. Duke: Twitter Reaction, Grades and Analysis

Ryan RudnanskyJun 7, 2018

There were questions about Duke heading into the tournament, but getting shocked by No. 15 Lehigh in the Round of 64 was a stunner.

Dynamic guards Austin Rivers and Seth Curry struggled from the floor, and the Mountain Hawks won via a team effort on Friday, 75-70.

Give Norfolk State credit for stunning Missouri on Friday, but Lehigh scored the bigger upset.

Tweets of the Night

When Lehigh was giving Duke a run for its money in the first half, ACCSports.com's Jim Young tweeted:

"

Duke not exactly winning the race to the loose balls. Man, they look flat.

— ACC Sports (@ACCSports) March 16, 2012"

College basketball addict Zane Safrit blasted Duke:

"

I'm not sure if it's possible to play softer D than Duke plays tonight. Even sadder is this is pretty standard for 'em this year.

— Zane Safrit (@ZaneSafrit) March 16, 2012"

Bleacher Report's own Zachary D. Rymer thought about going cray:

"

If Lehigh upsets Duke, I will go cray. Yes, cray.

— Zachary D. Rymer (@zachrymer) March 16, 2012"
"

Very, very physical game. Mason Plumlee and Justin Maneri each called for offensive fouls and their second personal.

Grades for Key Duke Players

Austin Rivers: C-

What we saw on Friday was that Austin Rivers still needs work. While he did move the ball around a bit, the Blue Devils needed him to score, and he simply struggled all night long.

Rivers finished with 19 points on 5-of-14 shooting.

Seth Curry: D

Seth Curry came into this matchup as one of the better pure three-point shooters in college basketball. But, he was virtually nonexistent throughout the game.

Curry ended with seven points on 1-of-9 shooting.

Mason Plumlee: A

Plumlee was all over the floor from the start, collecting 12 points and five boards by halftime. While the Blue Devils were bricking three-pointers, Plumlee went 6-of-6 from the floor in the first half.

Plumlee finished with 21 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks and shot a perfect 9-of-9 from the floor.

Grades for Key Lehigh Players

C.J. McCollum: A

McCollum exploded from the start, becoming the Mountain Hawks' leader. At the half, he had 12 points, five rebounds, three assists and a steal.

McCollum finished with 30 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Gabe Knutson: A

Knutson shot well from the field and was a good secondary option for Lehigh, as he had been all year for the Mountain Hawks. He showed grit and fearlessness against a team that was supposed to destroy him.

Knutson ended with 17 points and eight rebounds.

John Adams: B

Adams didn't shoot very well from the floor, but he crashed the glass and picked up three steals in the game. He exemplified a total team effort.

Adams posted seven points and seven rebounds.

Stat of the Night: 6-of-26

The Blue Devils lived and died by the three-pointer all season long, and against Lehigh, they simply didn't have it. They shot 6-of-26 from beyond the arc, highlighted by Austin Rivers and Seth Curry's struggles.

Game MVP: C.J. McCollum

While Friday's upset was a team effort by Lehigh, the Mountain Hawks simply wouldn't have won without McCollum. He was on his game from the start and was a one-man wrecking crew. He was by far the best player on the floor on Friday.

What's Next

After one of the NCAA tournament's biggest upsets, Lehigh goes on to play the winner between Notre Dame and Xavier in the Round of 32. Duke gets an early bus trip home.
