Florida State Survives Upset Bid Thanks to Saint Bonaventure Brain Cramp
Saint Bonaventure was controlling the game against heavily-favored Florida State throughout Friday's contest, but, in the end, the Bonnies imploded.
With 14 seconds left in the game, the Bonnies were trailing, 66-63, obviously needing a three-pointer to tie the game. Instead, senior Da'Quan Cook received a pass on the block and suddenly shot it up. With his teammates flailing their arms, he then got his own rebound...and shot it up again. This time it was blocked, and Florida State went on to win the game.
Florida State captured its first lead of the game with 5:40 remaining, when Ian Miller buried a three-pointer. From there, it was a back-and-forth game, with St. Bonaventure keeping within range.

The final possession didn't seem fair. The Bonnies had battled throughout the game, showing true resolve against a much more talented team in the Seminoles. No one gave them a chance to beat Florida State. The Seminoles were, after all, coming off wins against Duke and North Carolina in the ACC tournament.
There was also the fact that the referees missed a call on Florida State's inbounds pass on the preceding possession. In a screen capture, you can see one of the Seminoles inbounding the ball with his toe over the line. That should have been a violation.
Nonetheless, the boneheaded final possession was hard to watch, especially given it came from a senior on the team in Cook who played his last game for the Bonnies.
St. Bonaventure shot just 40 percent for the game, but showed heart and actually outrebounded Florida State. It would have been a VCU-esque upset if the Bonnies pulled it off, but, alas, it was not to be so.
Florida State will advance to the Round of 32 to face a strong team in Cincinnati. The Bearcats held off No. 11 seed Texas, 65-59, on Friday.
