2012 NFL Free Agent Tracker: Grading Every AFC North Addition so Far

Andrea HangstJun 7, 2018

Aside from retaining some of their in-house free agents, there haven't been many new additions to the AFC North through the first three days of free agency.

In fact, so far there have been only two, both signed by the Cleveland Browns. But that doesn't mean they aren't grade-worthy. Let's break out our rubrics and make some evaluations, shall we?

Cleveland Browns: DE Frostee Rucker

The Browns accomplished a coup of sorts by snagging a free agent away from a division rival, the Cincinnati Bengals. Rucker said on Thursday the main reason he decided to accept the Browns' offer is that he would be starting at right defensive end, rather than splitting time as he did as a Bengal.

Rucker is certainly an upgrade over Jayme Mitchell, last year's starter. Expect him to make an instant impact at the position and be a great complement to second-year left defensive end Jabaal Sheard.

The Browns picked up a free agent to fill a position of need, didn't break the bank to do it and snagged away a player from a rival team. Though the move doesn't get an A+, because who knows if Rucker can produce at a high level as an every-snap starter, it's surely a good one.

Grade: B+

Cleveland Browns: DE Juqua Parker

Juqua Parker, most recently of the Philadelphia Eagles, is an 11-year veteran at left defensive end. Considering the talent of Jabaal Sheard, it's clear the Browns didn't add Parker to start in 2012; instead, he provides much-needed depth and veteran leadership.

Of course, Parker's production isn't what it used to be; he netted just nine tackles in 2011, but he did have two fumble recoveries for touchdowns last season as well, and 1.5 sacks.

Expect Parker to not get much playing time. He might be rotated in when the situation warrants it, but his one-year contract suggests that he's little more than depth. Still, on a team that needed it, it's not a bad addition. if not the most flashy one.

Grade: B-
