NCAA Bracket 2012 Predictions: 7 Teams with Zero Chance to Win
NCAA tournament brackets are tough to pick. Guaranteed victories are tough to come by in March, but Friday's contests include a handful of easy picks.
Lopsided matchups are aplenty in the first few rounds. Lower seeds are still around, and are often outmatched by much tougher teams.
Some talented teams still sweat it out. Syracuse needed two questionable calls to get past UNC-Asheville on Thursday.
That will not happen on Friday. Seven of the 16 games are picks to lock in.
Here are those seven.
St. Bonaventure
1 of 7Andrew Nicholson is among the best players you have not heard of yet; however, the Bonnies are running into a red-hot Florida State team.
The Seminoles are coming off of victories over Duke and North Carolina in the ACC Tournament. Leonard Hamilton seems to have his team peaking at the right time. That does not bode well for the bid-stealing Bonnies.
Nicholson averages a double-double. He plays a solid inside-out game and is also a presence on the defensive end.
Beyond Nicholson, though, the Bonnies simply do not match up.
Florida State is among the best defensive teams in the nation. Their size will hamper Nicholson's production.
The Seminoles offense will not blow anyone away, but Michael Snaer is an emerging threat. He is considered one of the best on-ball defenders in the country, and his offensive game is rapidly improving.
Florida State's long-term potential is questionable, but they will walk away with a victory Friday.
Vermont
2 of 7The North Carolina Tar Heels will handle the Vermont Catamounts whether John Henson is healthy enough to play or not.
Henson is considered a game-time decision, according to ESPN.com.
The Catamounts rely on Patrick "Four" McGlynn for their scoring. He averages around 12 points per game and shoots almost 40-percent from beyond the arc. However, he is a freshman with no NCAA tournament experience.
Vermont must play this game at a slow pace to keep it close, but they won't. The Tar Heels are the masters of the fast break. That will be on full display on Friday.
North Carolina should sit Henson if there is any question about his availability later in the tournament. The Tar Heels should have no problem dispensing of the Catamounts without him.
Norfolk State
3 of 7The Norfolk State Spartans are in for a rude awakening Friday afternoon.
The Spartans will face the Missouri Tigers and fall hard.
Spartan forward Kyle O'Quinn averages a double-double and 2.7 blocked shots. He could present some problems down low for the Tigers, but he is not nearly enough to knock the Tigers off.
Missouri has too much firepower, and too many different players capable of delivering big shots.
Marcus Denmon was one of the Big 12's best scorers. Kim English is just as dangerous, and the Pressey brothers are terrors on both ends of the floor.
Ricardo Ratliffe will body up with O'Quinn down low. He is a solid defender, but also an overlooked player on offense.
Missouri has five players averaging in double figures. That is just too much for the Spartans.
Lehigh
4 of 7Lehigh's C.J. McCollum averaged 21.9 points per game this season. That ranks sixth in the nation, but the Mountain Hawks do not.
Despite McCollum's extravagant scoring ability, the Mountain Hawks are going to fall to Duke on Friday.
McCollum is a very good player, but he is just one player.
The Blue Devils line up Seth Curry and Austin Rivers in the backcourt and the Plumlee brothers in the frontcourt. All are above-average players. All understand the role they play for Coach K's squad.
Duke is very susceptible to upset bids if their three-point shots are not falling, but Lehigh does not have enough to exploit those weaknesses. The Blue Devils will not miss many wide-open looks.
Teams from the Patriot League are always fundamentally sound. Lehigh is no different, but the Blue Devils are too much for them to handle.
LIU-Brooklyn
5 of 7LIU-Brooklyn enjoyed a nice run to the NCAA tournament, beating Robert Morris to win the NEC title. Sadly, their tournament run is over before it even begins.
The Blackbirds will face the Michigan State Spartans in the second round.
Julian Boyd and Jamal Olasewere are both worth watching for the Blackbirds, even though the game will not be. Boyd averages over 17 points per game; Olasewere, just over 16 points.
Tom Izzo's Spartans are simply too good and too disciplined to fall asleep at the wheel on Friday. Draymond Green is one of the nation's most underrated players, and his supporting cast is more than enough to earn a Spartan victory.
Syracuse flirted with disaster on Thursday against No. 16 seed UNC-Asheville. Do not expect the Spartans to do the same.
South Florida
6 of 7South Florida is one of the best defensive teams in college basketball this season. The Bulls allowed just 56.8 points per game and held all but three opponents under 70 points.
One would think the Bulls would be better, considering their defensive prowess, but this team lost 13 regular-season contests. After tonight, they will have 14 losses.
Temple boasts one of the most underrated backcourts in this year's tournament.
Khalif Wyatt, Ramone Moore and Juan Fernandez are all capable ball-handlers and electric three-point shooters. Moore finished second in the Atlantic 10 in scoring, putting up double figures in all but two games.
Temple does not have a major presence down low, but their guards are enough to put pressure on anyone.
South Florida's lack of offense will be exploited in this matchup.
Detroit
7 of 7The Detroit Titans face a tall task against Kansas on Friday.
Expect this game to be closer than anticipated, but Kansas will walk away with the victory.
The Titans' Ray McCallum Jr. is a former McDonald's All-American. He averages just over 15 points per game despite his shoddy three-point shot.
Eli Holman is a legitimate presence in the paint for the Titans, but he is nowhere near Kansas' Thomas Robinson.
The Jayhawks may not be the best team in the country, but Robinson is one of the nation's best players. He is a dominant force, capable of throwing the Jayhawks on his back.
Robinson won't need to win this game on his own. Point guard Tyshawn Taylor is playing much better as of late, and the Jayhawks are a solid defensive team.
The Jayhawks are simply too much for the upstart Titans.
