NFL Free Agent Rumors: Teams Sure to Overpay to Fill Major Needs

Jesse ReedJun 7, 2018

Every year, NFL teams overpay free agents to fill positions of need on their roster.

2012 isn't any different, and there are a few teams currently pursuing players they will certainly pay too much in order to secure.

Here are three teams in danger of falling prey to their own fears and desires, along with the players who will cause them to stumble.

Seattle Seahawks and quarterback Matt Flynn

Per SI.com's Peter King:

"

Matt Flynn flying to Seattle today. Seahawks serious about him. Miami may need a Manning decision by late Friday to get in on Flynn.

"

Matt Flynn looks to me like he's going to end up being this year's Kevin Kolb. He's a system quarterback that has some serious limitations.

NFL Films guru Greg Cosell recently wrote this about Flynn:

"

Flynn is a member of a much larger quarterback fraternity, players who need to be coached and managed to maximize the skills they possess. They must be defined and enhanced by the methodology and the concepts of the passing game. That’s the way it works in the NFL for 80-90 percent of its quarterbacks.

"

In other words, he's not elite.

Don't be surprised if he gets paid like an elite quarterback, though.

Baltimore Ravens and offensive guard Evan Mathis

After losing Ben Grubbs to the New Orleans Saints, the Ravens are in full-on desperation mode. Not only do they have a void at the guard position, but center Matt Birk hasn't signed yet either.

Per Mark Maske of the Washington Post:

"

The Ravens already are pursuing Evan Mathis as Grubbs's potential replacement in Baltimore.

Desperate times call for desperate measures, and the Ravens will overpay for Mathis to fill a massive need at that position.

Kansas City Chiefs and tight end Kevin Boss

The Chiefs were actually hoping to land John Carlson...

Per NFL Network's Adam Caplan:

"

The Chiefs were really not happy that Carlson didn't sign. They put on full court press, but could not get him to the facility.

After missing out on their first target, the Chiefs will now take on their second option.

Per NFL Network's Jason La Canfora:

"

TE Kevin Boss on his way to visit KC. Chiefs had a lot of interest in TE John Carlson but he signed in MIN #freeagency

— Jason La Canfora (@JasonLaCanfora) March 14, 2012"

They desperately want to get another tight end to pair with Tony Moeaki. They've seen the success other teams have had by utilizing two big, athletic tight ends, and they will make sure they don't let Boss get away from them by overpaying him to stay.
