NCAA Brackets 2012: Grading the No. 1 Seeds' Chances of Winning It All

Richard LangfordJun 4, 2018

If your having a hard time deciphering which No. 1 seed will win this year's NCAA tournament, you have come to the right place.

Below is a breakdown of each region's top seed and their chances of having their season end with the ultimate glory.

South: Kentucky

The Wildcats enter this tournament as the easy choice for the No. 1 overall seed. They had a spectacular season and they are loaded with NBA talent.

However, they are incredibly young and inexperienced. Their starting lineup consists of three freshmen and two sophomores. This is always problematic in the tournament setting.

Experience is a nice luxury to have when games get close and the pressure meter is cranked up.

Also, entering the tournament as the nation's No. 1 team has not led to success. In the last 27 tournaments, the No. 1 team has only won it all three times.

Chance of Winning: 27.5 percent

East: Syracuse

The odds of the Orange winning this tournament looked a lot better a few days ago. Since then it came to light that stud center Fab Melo will not be eligible to participate.

Melo is the centerpiece of the Orange's defense. He controlled the paint. Now the Orange are left without anyone to give opposing guards caution when driving the lane, and their already weak rebounding takes a big hit.

Melo was the team's leading rebounder, and this is a squad that finished 125th in rebounding. It is nearly impossible to see the Orange running the table without him.

Chance of Winning: 7 percent

West: Michigan State

Tom Izzo is a master of getting the best performance out of his team's in the Big Dance. And this year he has the perfect team to lead.

The Spartans are deep and versatile. This team can bang with the best of them, and they can also get out and run when they have to.

This is a relentless defensive squad that likes to play pressure D and force teams into mistakes. On the other end, they are not a team that will be easily pressured.

The Spartans have a competent backcourt, and Izzo has the luxury of using a two-point guard set when he has to.

This team can rebound, move the ball and score efficiently. All of these are big trademarks of championship worthy teams.

Chance of Winning: 44.6 percent

Midwest: North Carolina

The Tar Heels are battle-tested and experienced. They have an incredibly strong frontcourt and should win the rebounding battle in every game they play.

They are good enough to win President Obama's pick as the eventual champs. They certainly have the stats to back it up.

They are first in the nation in rebounding, second in scoring and fourth in assists.

If you're looking for weaknesses, this team can struggle from behind the arc and can turn the ball over too often. They also are an average at best team from the charity stripe. Still, this a squad whose strengths far outweigh their weaknesses.

Chance of Winning: 39.3 percent
