NFL Draft 2012: Quinton Coples and the Biggest Enigmas in This Year's Class

Richard LangfordJun 7, 2018

Quinton Coples is loaded with talent and question marks. This will lead to any team that selects him to do so with trepidation.

They could be getting a dominant force that is a fixture in the opposition's backfield, or they could be getting an underachieving player that never lives up to his potential. He certainly isn't the only player in this draft to fit that mold.

Here are three players—all likely to go in the first round—that Winston Churchill would likely describe as "a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma."

Quinton Coples

Coples was inconsistent his senior year as he struggled while facing double teams. This left teams doubting that he would be able to excel against the increased talent he will find in the NFL.

Coples followed up his inconsistent senior campaign by dominating the Senior Bowl. He was nearly unblockable, and he erased any doubts that he had the ability to be a force at the next level.

However, this raised even more questions as to why he struggled so often in his senior season. He didn't always appear to give maximum effort. That is never something a team wants to see from a player they are planning on spending a first-round pick on.

Coples' talent and potential means he is going to be drafted in the first round, and most likely the first half of the first round. However, his inconsistencies certainly make it a risky pick.

Janoris Jenkins

Jenkins is easily one of the most gifted man-to-man cover corners in this draft. He is also just as easily one of the most questioned prospects in the draft.

Jenkins has an extensive history of run-ins with the law. During his college career he was twice arrested for possession of marijuana, failed a drug test and was arrested after he got into a bar fight.

He also has four children by three different women. None of these issues means that he won't be able to succeed in the NFL. He was able to succeed in college despite all of this going on in his life.

However, this seemingly wild off-the-field lifestyle will definitely raise some red flags about Jenkins' long-term prospects.

Michael Floyd

Floyd has the size and hands of a No. 1 receiver. He was also a very productive receiver in college.

However, there is reason to be concerned about his chances of succeeding in the NFL. There is a chance that Floyd's size may become too sizable. This is a player that is going to have to work hard to stay in shape to remain a legitimate threat in the NFL.

And after three alcohol-related arrests while in college, there is certainly reason enough to believe that Floyd may not have the character it takes to remain in top physical shape.
