WrestleMania 28 Matches: Power Ranking Matches by Their Classic Potential

Brian MaziqueJun 3, 2018

The Rock and John Cena's match has "overrated" written all over it. Two outstanding names, but one was great when he was in action regularly, the other has never been great in the ring.

Should we expect The Rock to carry Cena for this match; even considering he's been busy making bad action movies, where he bounces berries off his nipples?

If you're waiting on this one to blow the top off the arena, you're either 10 or stuck in the early 2000s, when The Rock had hair.

Like S.E. Hinton once said, "that was then, this is now." You're gonna be disappointed.

As this is a power rankings article based on in-ring action, you can see, I'm not enthused about this one.

As much as I love good mic work, there is nothing like a well-worked match, with flow, excitement and awesome theatrics.

Which matches will deliver?

To get into the other action of the night, here is a ranking of the matches, ordered by their potential to deliver on a classic level.

1. WWE Champion - CM Punk vs Chris Jericho

This one is pretty easy—Punk is at the top of his game right now. He's athletic, theatrical and a in-ring technician. He sells opponents moves very well, here's an example. Watch Punk's reaction to the awesome Enziguri from Alberto Del Rio:

Its perfectly executed, and it was the best moment of the TLC 2012 pay-per-view.

We know the champion can dish the pain, but he can take it as well.

Jericho is a legend, but he's the rare legend that is still capable of putting on a solid in-ring performance. Watching Jericho at this stage of his career is like watching Ray Lewis.

No, he's not quite as fast as he was, but he's still a quality performer, and nobody can sell it like he can.

This matchup has the best chance to be special. It's got the star power, comparable body and skill levels, and it's for some prestigious gold.

In the words of former Jets linebacker Bart Scott, "can't wait!!!"

2. Worlds Heavyweight Champion - Daniel Bryan vs Sheamus

Not quite sold on Bryan yet?

You will be after this one. Things are setting up for this to be Bryan's true coming-out party. I'm not predicting he'll keep his title, but I do feel confident he'll be entertaining.

My prediction is that Sheamus will win the match and title.

A heel turn could be on the horizon for Bryan or Sheamus in this one. Since I don't see Punk losing his title, it's hard too imagine two mega-faces holding the two biggest pieces of gold.

By the end of this one, I expect that Bryan will have gained more respect in defeat, than he would have in victory.

3. Hell in a Cell - Triple H vs The Undertaker with Special Guest Referee Shawn Michaels

There will be so much wrestling royalty in the ring for this one, hardcore fans should have their DVRs set to record.

It would be higher on the list if the in-ring payoff had a chance to be better.

Most should remember the Triple H vs Kevin Nash match at TLC 2012. That pitiful match has me skeptical about another match with Triple H and any tall, old wrestler.

Right now, the Undertaker fits that description, and the Heartbreak Senior Citizen can't change that by donning the stripes.

If Michaels and the Taker relive this moment, I may just change my mind:

As great as the memories are, a redux is highly unlikely.

4. The Rock vs. John Cena

With all the crap I talked about this match, you'd think I'd have it last, but I don't. It's still cool to see the Rock in the ring. That said, this match has been so hyped, its nearly impossible for it not to let us down.

Considering the situation, what could happen in this match that would carry any long-range appeal?

Not much.

Everyone knows the Rock is a short timer as an in-ring performer. That removes just about any substance that could come from the match.

The Rock will win, because it's in his hometown, plus there is no title on the line. The crowd will cheer him without pause, and because of this, it could set up the Cena heel turn.

Its about 40 years in the making, but that occurrence is the only thing that can save what will be a boring match from an in-ring action standpoint.

5. Intercontinental Champion - Cody Rhodes vs. The Big Show

I am not a fan of big guy-little guy feuds. There are too many in-ring limitations, and we all know the Show is slow as molasses in the ring.

Rhodes has tremendous potential, but right now it seems like the WWE has no idea where or who to put him against.

This match and feud seems thrown together, and it won't render an exciting product.

The WWE needs to get Rhodes in a feud with Kofi Kingston or another superstar that he can have classic and memorable matches against.
