March Madness 2012: Overrated High Seeds Doomed to Be Upset
The RPI doesn’t tell us the whole story.
Its archaic formula is what the committee goes by, and it creates overrated teams that are going to flame out in a hurry.
Just because they are from a major conference doesn’t mean they deserve a No. 4 seed. Here are three teams that are ripe to get knocked out before the madness really even begins.

Report: Biggest Spenders in Men's CBB 🤑
No. 3 Baylor (27-7)
The Bears are full of potential, but they can’t seem to get over the hump. Something is missing. They had such a great start but have been merely average of late, going 6-5 down the stretch.
Sure they beat Kansas, but we must remember they had already lost to the Jayhawks twice.
Perry Jones III is a prime candidate to land in early foul trouble, and that would do some major damage to the Bears defense.
CBS Sports’ Seth Davis predicted the Bears will lose to No. 14 seeded South Dakota State, which would probably be the biggest upset of the tournament. While I think it’s going to be a nail-biter, I envision Pierre Jackson coming through in the clutch.
But that’s when the party ends.
If No. 6 UNLV beats No. 11 Colorado, the Runnin’ Rebels are going to dominate on the perimeter and send the Bears home early.
Regardless, the Bears are not going to the Sweet Sixteen.
No. 4 Michigan (24-9)
The Wolverines are a poor rebounding club (311th in the nation) and struggle to score when the three-point shot isn’t falling.
They drew No. 13 Ohio in the first round, and that’s a big problem. The Bobcats have a criminally underrated guard in D.J. Cooper, and there isn’t a single player on Michigan that can keep him in check.
The Wolverines will go as far as their three-point shots will take them and that always ends up being a death wish in the NCAA tournament.
No. 5 New Mexico (27-6)
The Lobos, a team that have losses against Santa Clara, New Mexico State and TCU, has no business being a five-seed, and a quick exit is going to prove it.
They don’t have a proven score and can suffer some serious scoring droughts at times. No. 12 Long Beach State is a dangerous team that should have been seeded higher. But that’s the life of a mid-major.
The 49ers have won 18 of 20 games as one of the hottest teams in the country. They match up well with the Lobos, and it’s the easiest upset to pick in the field.
Don’t buy any stock in New Mexico.
