Tim Tebow Is Staying Another Year? God Help Us All
As much as Thom Brennaman would have liked to have you believe it, Tim Tebow—the University of Florida’s Heisman winning QB—is not a god in waiting.
The endless brigade of Tebow worshippers is enough to make me want to cannibalize myself; it’s disgusting and mostly unwarranted. Don’t get me wrong, the kid appears to be a nice guy with a good head on his shoulders, but that’s not an anomaly in college football. Half the squad at BYU went on missions, but I guess because they are Mormons, their efforts and sacrifices don’t count, right?
Further, Myron Rolle of the Florida State Seminoles is a Rhodes Scholar who is getting his medical degree so he can go to Africa and help ailing children. But since he’s not doing that right now, I guess that doesn’t count either.
Well, then, what about Clemson’s Ray McElrathbey? He took in his little brother when it became clear that his mom was no longer responsible enough. He is responsible for the care and upbringing of this young man while he, personally, is still a student-athlete. But, I guess because he’s doing that for his brother, it seems like less of a sacrifice, right? Please, give me a break.
You see, Tim Tebow isn’t breaking any new ground on being a nice person, there are other good guys in college football. However, for some reason, people keep elevating this guy to deity status.
Stop it! He’s human like everyone else. Heck, if his two INT’s had led to a Gator loss, would people still be singing his praises? He was not the only one on the field that night. Percy Harvin had 122 yards rushing, Ahmad Black had a key INT at the end of the game and Oklahoma—sorry, but you should not have been in that game in the first place. They can think the media’s overrated bias towards Stoops for their good fortune. But that’s another story.
And now that Tebow has decided to stay for another year, everyone wants to talk about his loyalty and character; get real. He’s staying for two reasons: for one, it will never be any better than it is right now. The hero worship, the infinite respect, the unyielding butt kissing, etc. is at a fever pitch right now. Tebow can do no wrong.
Second, he would not have been a QB in the NFL this year anyhow. Any team that picked him would move him to another position. It won’t matter what he does next year, he will never be an NFL QB.
Why? His arm is weak, so unless he’s in a west coast offense, his throws will be intercepted. Seriously, have you ever seen a jump pass by a pro QB? Me neither. Further, when he does try and scramble, he won’t be bowling anyone over. DE’s will be salivating at the possibility of knocking this kid onto his backside. But, even easier than that, look at Urban Meyer’s other QB protege, Alex Smith, he hasn’t exactly been a success in the league now has he? Translation, Timmy Tebow may be Superman right now, but his kryptonite will come in the form of his NFL career.
Some say he would make a good tight end or fullback/running back. Maybe, maybe not. We’ll see. In the meantime, could we keep the conversation about him to a minimum for a little while. Yeah, he’s won a Heisman and two National Titles, but so did Reggie Bush (one was shared I know), but that does not make him a god. He’s just a football player that’s not a jerk, he didn’t break the mold on that either-despite what Thom Brennaman would have you think.
