NCAA Tournament 2012: Major Conference Bubble Teams Who Will Be Left out

Timothy RappMar 11, 2012

There are quite a few schools that don't like St. Bonaventure today.

The Bonnies won the Atlantic 10 tournament, earned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament and stole one more berth away from potential bubble teams.

So which of those teams will have broken hearts when the selection committee unveils the official bracket for this year's NCCA tournament?

I have the Drexel Dragons as my last team in, so let's see how a few of the schools I left out compare.

Seton Hall Pirates (20-12)

The knock against Drexel is an RPI of 64, a strength of schedule at 248 and only one win against an RPI Top 50 team. The case for them is a CAA regular-season title, a 27-6 overall record and a 25-2 record in the past 27 games. The Dragons lost to a strong VCU team in the CAA tournament championship.

Seton Hall's RPI (61) and wins against RPI Top 50 teams (three) aren't much more impressive, nor is the team's 5-7 record in its past 12 games.

But the Pirates' strength of schedule was 57th in the nation. Had the Pirates won more than one game in the Big East tournament and beaten Louisville, they would get the nod.

But they didn't, so I have them as my first team out.

Mississippi State Bulldogs (21-11)

The Bulldogs are 5-7 in the past 12 games.

They have an RPI of 73.

They have two RPI Top 50 wins.

They have a strength of schedule of 87.

I'm not impressed.

Mississippi State finished 21-10 (8-8) in the SEC, but after a strong start to the season they tailed off. One of the reasons for that strong start may have been a non-conference schedule ranked 200th in the nation.

The Bulldogs will lament limping down the stretch.

Washington Huskies (21-10)

Washington doesn't have a single win against an RPI Top 50 opponent. They have an RPI of 70 and a strength of schedule of 94.

The Huskies may have been top dog in the weak Pac-12 (14-4 in conference play), but they lost in the quarterfinal round to Oregon State. Washington didn't need to do much in the Pac-12 tournament to help their case, but the fact that they did nothing will keep them out of the tourney.

Miami Hurricanes (19-12)

One one hand, Miami has the two most impressive wins of any school on this list with victories over Duke and Florida State.

On the other, they only have one other win against an RPI Top 100 opponent (Massachusetts).

Two wins shouldn't get a team in, especially when the other 17 wins weren't all that impressive. Miami is out.
