March Madness 2012: Analyzing Potential Last Four in

Ryan RudnanskyJun 7, 2018

As we look ahead to the 68-team field in the NCAA Tournament, there are several squads on the fringe who are hoping to hear their names called.

The last four teams in have the potential to create some first-round upsets.

Here's a breakdown of the last four teams I see getting in.

South Florida (20-13, 12-6 Big East)

If the South Florida Bulls didn't get in, it would be a travesty and certainly one of the most questionable omissions this year.

But I see no way they can't make it in.

The Bulls have gone 20-13, including 12-6 in the competitive Big East. They played Syracuse close and took No. 23 Notre Dame to overtime. They also beat then-No. 18 Louisville on Feb. 29.

The Bulls don't "wow" you as a team statistically, but they play hard and tough. There isn't one player on this team averaging 10 points or more, which is why it's remarkable they've still been able to go 20-13.

I'll say this, though: their defense is legit. That alone makes them a team to watch in March Madness.

Seton Hall (20-12, 8-10 Big East)

It's possible that Seton Hall doesn't make the NCAA Tournament, especially if you consider their second-half troubles, but Mississippi State didn't do enough with a weak RPI at the end of the season and the Miami Hurricanes haven't done enough in my opinion.

I think Seton Hall is the last major selected, by default if anything else. Not exactly a ringing endorsement for the Pirates, but they do have some players in Jordan Theodore, Herb Pope and Fuquan Edwin.

NC State (22-12, 9-7 ACC)

It's not exactly fun playing in the same conference as North Carolina, Duke, Florida State and Virginia, but the Wolfpack have held their own despite stiff competition.

They move the ball extremely well, averaging 16.0 assists per game (13th in the nation). They have a solid point guard in Lorenzo Brown, a good rebounder in Richard Howell and a star in C.J. Leslie, who is averaging 14.6 points, 7.5 rebounds, 1.6 blocks and 1.1 steals while shooting 53 percent from the floor.

NC State lost by five points to Duke on Feb. 16 and by two points to North Carolina in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament on Saturday.

Drexel (27-6, 16-2 CAA)

The Drexel Dragons don't exactly play in the toughest conference, but that doesn't mean they aren't a worthy team for the NCAA Tournament.

They play well as a team, with four players averaging double figures in points, and they play tough defense.

I don't know if Drexel has enough for a first-round upset, but teams like this have a way of surprising.
