Selection Sunday: Dangerous Bubble Teams the Field Should Fear

Tim KeeneyMar 11, 2012

It's Selection Sunday. That means the announcement of the official NCAA tournament bracket is just hours away, and bubble teams can stop worrying.

Here's a look at projected NIT teams—according to ESPN's Joe Lunardi—that could really surprise some people if the selection committee gives them a chance in the Big Dance (rhyme intended).

Washington Huskies

The Huskies are as inconsistent as any team out there, as evidenced by their loss to Oregon State in the Pac-12 tourney. But when they are on, they have the talent to beat anyone.

Not many teams can say they have two players who are potential first-round picks, but the Huskies have that in Tony Wroten and Terrence Ross.

Throw in electric sharpshooter C.J. Wilcox and Aziz N'Diaye, who can control the paint on defense with his 7-foot frame, and the Huskies have some parts that make them really interesting in March.

Head coach Lorenzo Romar always seems to do a good job in the NCAA tournament, but the Huskies, who have a poor resume, will have to pass the "eye test" to make it in this year.

Don't forget the Dawgs almost beat Marquette and Duke, both top-three seeds, at Madison Square Garden in January. They should get at least some credit for that, especially with a weak bubble.

Drexel Dragons

Drexel has won 25 of its last 27 games. No matter who the Dragons have played against, that is an amazing stat.

Don't underestimate what constant winning can do for a team. Once you get used to a winning nature, and once you simply learn how to win games, it doesn't matter who you play. You'll have a chance no matter what.

What's more, the Dragons are incredibly efficient on defense. They allow just 0.91 points per possessions and they will drag any team through the mud.

It won't be pretty, but if you can play defense and rebound the ball like Drexel can (they are efficient on offense, too. 1.06 PPP), you can go far in March.

Iona Gaels

Scott Machado, MoMo Jones and Mike Glover make up arguably the most underrated trio in the nation.

Machado is a dynamic point guard who has better vision that anybody in the nation, but he also shoots, rebounds and plays great defense.

The senior is averaging 13.6 points, 9.9 assists (!), 5.0 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game. Wow.

Then you have Jones, a transfer from Arizona, who can absolutely light it up from deep. Earlier this season, he scored 43 against Canisius. On the year, he's averaging 16 points per game.

Throw in Glover, who is an absolute force in the paint. At 6'7", 215 pounds, he is averaging 18.5 points, nine rebounds and over a block and a steal per game.

Iona lacks a marquee win, but they did only lose to Purdue by one. If the Gaels cracked the tournament, they would cause a lot of problems.
