NCAA Bracket 2012: Predicting the Four No. 1 Seeds for March Madness

Nicholas GossJun 7, 2018

Without a ton of elite teams in college basketball this season, there's at least six or eight teams who have a strong case to be given a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.

While Kentucky and Syracuse are the two teams most likely to earn a top seed, there's many schools who would be worthy of the two remaining No. 1 seeds.

Let's predict who the top seeds in the 2012 NCAA tournament will be.

Kentucky, SEC

The Wildcats have had a tremendous season, so regardless if they win the SEC tournament or not, they should be a lock for a No. 1 seed.

Kentucky finished SEC play with a perfect 16-0 record and go into Sunday's SEC title game with a 32-1 overall record.

The Wildcats' best wins came against Florida (three times), Kansas, Louisville and North Carolina. The SEC wasn't a top conference this season, but Kentucky proved it could dominate against their own SEC rivals and top teams from the Big 12 and ACC conferences.

John Calipari's team is a lock for a top seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Syracuse, Big East

Even though they were upset by Cincinnati in the semifinal of the Big East Tournament, it would be hard for the NCAA selection committee to pass over Syracuse when handing out the top seeds for March Madness.

The Orange dominated an ultra competitive Big East conference with a 17-1 record and several big wins against Marquette, Georgetown and Louisville. They also have an impressive non-conference win against Florida.

Syracuse has been a model of consistency all season and should be a lock for a top seed in the NCAA tournament.

North Carolina, ACC

Even if the Tar Heels lose in the ACC tournament final, they would still be deserving a No. 1 seed this year.

North Carolina is 14-1 in their last 15 games and have beaten tough ACC opponents such as Duke and Florida State, as well as quality non-conference schools such as Wisconsin from the Big Ten. They also challenged themselves by playing Kentucky and only lost to the Wildcats by one point.

The Tar Heels have been one of the top teams throughout the season. It would be hard to replace them with another team when handing out No. 1 seeds.

Baylor/Missouri, Big 12

Whoever wins the Big 12 Conference Tournament final between Baylor and Missouri should be given a No. 1 seed in March Madness.

Missouri has been one of the surprises of the season and has quality wins against Baylor, Kansas and California. At 29-4 going into Sunday, the Tigers have consistently been a top team throughout the year and are very deserving of a No. 1 seed if the become Big 12 champions.

Baylor has beaten Kansas, Kansas State and Mississippi State and are playing their best basketball of the season right now. The Bears have a ton of talent and are full of confidence thanks to their ongoing run in the Big 12 tournament.

With a conference title over an elite team, Baylor should receive the fourth and final No. 1 seed.
