March Madness 2012: Teams Guaranteed to Dominate Inferior Opponents

Andrew KulhaJun 5, 2018

Don't be fooled by the occasional Cinderella story, more often than not the better team will advance in the NCAA basketball tournament.

Sure, every now and then a sleeper will come out of nowhere, get hot and run through a couple of the big schools, but that's a rarity. They just get hyped up a lot more, so it seems like a common occurrence.

Big schools undoubtedly always have an advantage, and there are a few major powerhouses that I expect to dominate in March Madness 2012.

Here are some teams that you won't have to worry about against lesser seeds:

Kentucky Wildcats

The Wildcats are by far the best team in the nation, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them as the last team standing when all is said and done.

They've got a great frontcourt/backcourt combo in freshman forward Anthony Davis—averaging 14.3 points and 10 rebounds per game—and sophomore guard Doron Lamb and his 13.2 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.7 points per game.

This is a team that has only lost one time all year, which came at Indiana, and since then they haven't shown any more signs of regression.

A John Calipari-coached team is always a dangerous one, especially with a No. 1 seed. They will be very hard to beat, and I highly doubt we'll see them get upset.

Ohio State Buckeyes

At 25-6, the Buckeyes are going to be a force to be reckoned with in the tournament, especially if they can get big man Jared Sullinger playing at a high level.

The center position is so important in the tournament, as it allows you to control the paint and eventually the tempo of the game, so if Sullinger is on, this team becomes almost impossible to beat. He's nearly averaging a double-double with 17.3 points and 9.4 points per game.

The Buckeyes may find themselves the most dangerous when senior guard William Buford is on though. He's the only senior on the team, which will be a very important role in big-game situations, and he has a knack for putting up big games.

When this team is rolling on all cylinders they are almost unbeatable. I expect them to be dominant in the tournament.

Michigan State Spartans

You can never count out a Tom Izzo-led team, and it's his coaching that will make the Spartans a nightmare for inferior opponents.

Led by senior Draymond Green and his 16.3 points, 10.3 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game, this team is capable of getting hot and making a run all the way to the Final Four.

They will be well-coached, and they will be ready to take on whatever opponent is in their way.

If Izzo can get sophomore guard Keith Appling to play at a high level in the tournament, the Spartans will be a nightmare.
