Spencer Fisher: The Greatest Fighter Who Will Never Matter to Title Rankings

James CJan 11, 2009

I spent the past few days watching old matches, noting one very interesting thing that I never could get past. Why the hell hasn't Spencer Fisher been named most under-rated fighter in the history of televised fighting?

I've only seen one 'boring' Spencer Fisher match. I know a lot of you have his last wrestle-fest with Frank Edgar on your minds...but that's only one versus the last five out of six Lyoto Machida matches. And if you like the mechanics of wrestling and great ground work... it was awesome.

"The King" is truly that, King of entertainingly pointless matches!

At 22 and 4, Spencer has a very solid record behind him and will fight at the drop of a hat. He even cut a reported 20 pounds to get fight Sam Stout on short notice. He's only gone to decision six times out of his 26 matches. In his wins, only three times has THAT gone to decision.

Yet he hasn't gotten a title shot. He's never had a No. 1 Contender match. He's never even brushed up against the title or the champion in a lunch line. The guy is just NOT a factor.

But here's the weird thing: He doesn't care.

I guess that's fair, since I don't care either. And neither should you.

Spencer's entertaining. If he's on the card, you're guaranteed at least ONE good match, that most likely won't go the distance. Not only that, he'll fight anyone, any style.

Stand-up? Check. 11 wins by KO/TKO.

BJJ? Check. Eight wins by submission.

So support Spencer Fisher! He may not ever wear the gold, but he'll always shine.

As much as any Irish guy with pale skin and a badly swollen, bloody face can shine.
