SEC Tournament 2012 Scores: Breaking Down Best and Worst from Conference Tourney

Ross DautelMar 8, 2012

With four games in the books from New Orleans, it's time to break down the best and worst from Thursday's opening round of the SEC tournament.

The Good: LSU's Johnny O'Bryant

O'Bryant was the driving force behind the Tigers' opening-round victory over Arkansas, scoring 18 points to go with 11 rebounds. The 18 points were 10 above his season average of 8.3

Twelve of O'Bryant's points came in the second half, which ultimately propelled LSU to victory. After entering the locker room tied at the break, the Tigers started the second half on a 10-2 run and never looked back, cruising to a 70-54 win.

The Good: Alabama's Trevor Lacey

The fifth-seeded Crimson Tide were the heavy favorite in Thursday's game against 12th-seeded South Carolina. Trevor Lacey made sure that no upset was in the cards for the Gamecocks.

Just a freshman, Lacey demonstrated the poise of a college veteran down the stretch, netting seven points in the final 3:00 minutes of the game to lead his team to victory.

All in all, Lacey accounted for 15 points (nine above his average) on 4-of-5 shooting and 6-of-6 from the charity stripe.

Lacey and the Tide will try to keep the good times rolling in Friday's quarterfinal matchup against No. 4 Florida.

The Good: Ole Miss' Nick Williams

Sitting at 18-12, Ole Miss has some serious postseason aspirations, and Williams made sure that the Rebels padded the resume, scoring a career-high 22 points against Auburn.

Williams was also extremely efficient, shooting 9-of-14 from the floor including 4-of-8 from behind the arc.

Two of those threes came early in the second half with the game still close, but Williams helped spark a 12-4 Ole Miss run on the way to a 68-54 victory.

Williams will try to replicate his performance Friday when the Rebels take on No. 2 Tennessee.

The Good: Georgia's Gerald Robinson

With a sub .500 record, a postseason berth for the Bulldogs seems like a long shot, meaning their season could have ended with a loss to heavily-favored Mississippi State.

With a 23-point, five-assist performance, Gerald Robinson ensured that the Bulldogs' season, and his college career, lived to see another day.

Many will recall Georgia's unimaginable run to the SEC tournament crown in 2008 after finishing conference play with just a 4-12 record.

If Robinson keeps performing like he did today against Mississippi State, more magic may be in store for Georgia

The Bad: Mississippi State

Speaking of Mississippi State, Thursday's opening-round upset loss to Georgia could end up costing the Bulldogs a bid to the NCAA tournament.

Mississippi State was 19-5 and ranked as high as 15th at one point just a month ago. But the Bulldogs proceeded to drop five of their final seven in the regular season, severely hindering their tournament resume.

After Thursday's embarrassing performance, they will have to sit tight and hope for the best on Selection Sunday. Mississippi State could still very well get in, but a loss to lowly Georgia on Thursday certainly won't do them any favors come Sunday.

The Bad: Auburn's Frankie Sullivan

Sullivan is the Tigers' leading scorer, averaging at a clip of 12.7 points per game. On Thursday he eclipsed that total with 15, but it took him 15 shots to do it.

To make things worse, Sullivan was an atrocious 1-of-11 from three-point land, an unacceptable percentage for an upperclassman in a postseason tournament.

Sullivan did play all 40 minutes of the game against Ole Miss and was likely playing on tired legs towards the end, but it still doesn't make up for his abysmal day from the floor.

Due to his performance, the sub .500 Tigers will spend the rest of the postseason on their couches watching.
