Tiger Woods Still Struggling with Consistency in 2012 Cadillac Championship
Tiger Woods had a bittersweet Round 1 at the 2012 Cadillac Championship at Doral.
He kicked off the event with an outstanding shot from the fairway on the first hole, setting himself up for the tap-in eagle.
That ended up being the highlight of his day, as Woods shot an even 72, placing him in a 10-way tie for 25th place.
Adam Scott and Jason Dufner are the co-leaders in the clubhouse at six under (par). (Click here for full leaderboard.)
After posting an incredibly impressive 62 last Sunday, it looked as if the momentum had carried over with the eagle.
Instead, his putting was once again the main culprit for his struggles.
A bogey on the par-four fourth hole was because of a badly missed putt—ditto for the ninth hole. He ended up collecting two birdies and four bogeys in addition to the eagle.
So what does it mean?
Sure it’s only 18 holes of golf, but Woods had a real opportunity to put his mind at ease by playing a strong round less than a week after his blistering performance.
Clearly the mental issues going on in Woods’ head are not going away, and his horrific putting is the result.
There seems to be a mental hurdle that has been impossible for Woods to jump over.
The same guy who used to drain 20-foot putts with his eyes closed is now struggling to sink five-footers.
Since coming back from all of his issues, the No. 1 part of his game to blame was his swing; he got a new coach and spent countless hours adjusting after knee surgery.
Now that he has improved his stroke, it’s the putting that has failed him.
Woods is still very much in this tournament, but it looks like he still has a ways to go before deeming him a favorite at next month’s Masters.
Sooner or later, Woods is going to experience a breakthrough…right?
