2013 Michigan Football Recruiting: Top Commitments, Players Considering U-M
Let's take a look at what Michigan is doing right now, shall we? Big Blue bounced back on the trail in a major way last cycle as Brady Hoke landed a top 10 recruiting class in just his first full year as chief Wolverine.
This year, Hoke and the folks in Ann Arbor are off to a good start in what has the makings of another great class. For this read, I'm going to take a dive into some top commitments for Michigan and look at some updates for some of their top targets.
Let's go!
2013 Michigan Recruiting Class Capsule
1 of 9As it appears right now, the Wolverines hold 13 commitments and are doing a solid job at filling needs while gobbling up good talent. They have a top flight QB prospect and are in the mix for other prospects.
It looks like the final tally of incoming players next February is going to be around 20, give or take. So look for Michigan to pride itself on quality players that also fill needs going forward this cycle.
Top Commitment: Shane Morris, QB
2 of 9The top flight QB that I mentioned before is of course "Sugar" Shane Morris. A Michigan native, Morris is one of the top overall players—not just at QB—in the country.
He's 6'3", 190-pounds, left handed and possesses a strong arm to make any throw he is asked to. Morris' accuracy is still developing but he has flashed some pinpoint throws down the field.
Showing quick feet, agility and nice set up quickness, Morris can attack the edges and also make some drive saving runs. He's the QB of the future in Ann Arbor.
Prime Commitment: Dymonte Thomas, DB
3 of 96'1", 185-pounds, Thomas is a jack of all trades player that can factor as a WR, DB, RB, return man and more. He's one of the best overall players in the nation and among the elite in the Midwest.
Safety is Thomas' most likely destination, where his speed can aid his range and allow him to get off the hashes to pick off balls in the passing game. Thomas plays pretty physically and will come up in the run game to support his front seven.
He's likely to be a star at Michigan in a few seasons.
Top Target: Ty Isaac, RB
4 of 9Michigan is in the hunt for Isaac, who is ranked in the top 20 overall recruits by Rivals. 6'3", 215-pounds, Isaac is a big back with little back speed, agility and elusiveness.
He can factor in the passing game, as he shows great hands and the ability to shake CBs at the juke point when releasing. Isaac is a sheer playmaker and reportedly wants to stay in the Midwest and play in a pro-style offense.
Michigan fits that mold, if you ask me.
Muhammad Plans to Visit Michigan at Some Point
5 of 9One of the top prospects in the Atlantic region, Alquadin Muhammad of Don Bosco Prep (NJ), has interest in Michigan and the feeling is mutual from the Wolverine coaches.
6'4", 230-pounds Muhammad is a DE prospect that can crash down off the edge and flashes strength to stop and stack vs. the run.
Look for Big Blue to stay on Muhammad all the way through.
Wolverines Leading for Levenberry?
6 of 9E.J. Levenberry is a heck of a player, as evidenced by Rivals ranking him as the No.14 player in the country. 6'3", 230-pounds, Levenberry is a LB with great athleticism, instincts and smarts to read and react very, very quickly.
He shows great range and speed and can dart through run alleys to make TFLs or drop back in coverage and make plays to combat the pass.
Recruiting Spotlight: 2013 Offensive Line Class
7 of 9Right now, Michigan's strongest unit in their 2013 class is their OL. Last year it was the LB class, and this year the Wolverines are supplementing more bodies in the trenches.
This will be a strong unit for Michigan, as Kugler and Fox are already 4-star prospects according to Scout.com
Treadwell Planning to Tread in Ann Arbor?
8 of 9Laquon Treadwell is ranked No. 31 in the Rivals 100, and the 6'3", 185-pound WR is a top tier prospect. He's an Illinois native with very good catch-in-a-crowd ability, concentration, soft hands and a large catch radius.
Michigan is considered to be the leader and reportedly nearly got a pledge from Treadwell recently, but Alabama, Ohio State and Notre Dame have come on strong as of late.
Look out for these four schools with Big Blue staying in the thick of things.
After Signing Four LBs Last Year, U-M Still After More 2nd Level Defenders
9 of 9Last cycle saw Michigan sign Kaleb Ringer, Royce Jenkins-Stone, James Ross and Joe Bolden, who are four of the top tier LB prospects in the 2012 class.
This year, the Wolverines are recruiting E.J. Levenberry and also Mike McCray and Dorian O'Daniel. O'Daniel is ranked No. 38 in the top 100 by Rivals, while McCray is a few spots further back at No. 44 overall.
McCray and Michigan seem like a perfect match, and he'll be announcing later this week after visiting Michigan recently. A future SAM 'backer at 6'4", 230-pounds, McCray has not landed an Ohio State offer even though he's got ties in Columbus.
O'Daniel has Michigan as his leader as well. He's just 6'1", 205-pounds, but his play speed, range and quickness make him an outstanding recruit.
