SEC Tournament 2012: Familiar Foes Won't Slow Down Kentucky's Run

Jeff ChaseJun 4, 2018

The Kentucky Wildcats have made it through the regular season owning the SEC with a 16-0 conference record, and that shouldn't look any different as John Calipari's squad will look to tear through the SEC on their way to March Madness.

The team's only loss this season came at the hands of the Indiana Hoosiers, which was in early December and certainly shocked not just the team but the entire nation. The loss definitely made the team realize they were not invincible, and from there they went on a 22-game winning streak.

Being the number one team in the nation, as well as obviously the top seed in this year's SEC tournament, the Wildcats shouldn't have a problem walking over their conference foes.

Their biggest challenge in pursuit of the SEC title would be the Florida Gators in the second round. That is the same Gators team that they have out scored 152-117 this season.

The same goes for teams they could face in the title game, but even the second-seed Tennessee Volunteers haven't been much of a threat. After an early season close win that had a final score of 65-62, the Wildcats shut them down at home in an easy 69-44 route.

The team has been doing a fine job in terms of scoring all season long, and have a point differential of nearly 20 points a game.

Much of that can be assisted to the strong play of Doron Lamb, as well as the ridiculous play of freshman power forward Anthony Davis.

Davis has been averaging 14.4 points per game, while also grabbing 9.8 rebounds per night. There is no doubt that he has been one of the most impressive freshman this season, and he has certainly shown that he can dominate the SEC any night.

The SEC is a strong division, as nearly every team is nicely over .500, but the fact of the matter is that the Wildcats just stand so much more above their conference foes.

Teams have come close to taking down the Wildcats, but at this point in the season, the 30-game winning team who made the Final Four just a season ago is looking too strong heading into the college post season.

At the rate of which they are playing, it doesn't look as if any of these teams can really derail their pursuit of entering the Big Dance with just a single loss.

Their conference play has just been too good, as well as them taking down top teams like the Kansas Jayhawks and North Carolina Tar Heels.

Somebody may give them a nice run for their money at some point in the SEC tournament, but in the end they will be too much to knock over.
