Why Dana White Won't Sign Fedor, and Why It's Good He Hasn't

Mike LeanzaJan 9, 2009

This is the first installment of what I hope to be a long and successful series. The premise of course, is why Dana White won't do certain things that MMA fans really want him to do. In this installment, I look at the real reason why Fedor won't be coming to the UFC any time soon.

The answer is a name. I'll give you three clues, let's see if you can guess it.

  • He's a UFC champion
  • I'm pretty sure he sharpens his elbows
  • He can finish you, pretty much any way he wants to, whenever he want's to.

Yeah, Anderson Silva. "But Mike, what does Anderson Silva have to do with Dana Whites refusal to sign Fedor." Because Dana White firmly believes that Anderson Silva is the best pound for pound fighter in the world.

If Dana White were to sign Fedor, Fedor would immediatley become the UFC's most popular fighter, taking all of the attention off of Anderson, and making Dana look like a fool.

See, Anderson Silva was pretty much a diamond in the rough, that Dana White just happened to stumble upon while looking for a Fight Night opponent for Chris Leben. Ever since, that diamond has been polished, and has made all of the other jewels look like plastic knockoffs.

Dana White prides himself on the fact that he holds this diamond. He rubs that diamond in the face of every other organization because HE found it, HE put it on the main stage, and HE is the only man that possesses such an artifact.

Enter Fedor. Ever since his abuse of the PRIDE heavyweights back in Japan, every organization has dreamt of signing him. At one point, even Dana White wanted him. But Fedor turned him down.

Dana was shocked. No doubt about it. Fedor had actually turned down a contract to fight for the most popular MMA organization in the world. It was at that very moment, that Dana started to really emphasize the greatness of Anderson Silva.

He loves Anderson so much, that he is willing to disrespect any of his other fighters. How? Well have you ever heard GSP get any Silva-esque praise? No. Yet GSP is currently seen as the number two P4P fighter in the world, right behind Silva.

So if you add Fedor, number three in most P4P rankings, to the equation, you've got yourself quite a conundrum.

If the UFC had the top three P4P fighters in the world, it would monopolize the entire MMA circuit. Fedor is the biggest draw of any fighter outside the UFC. Think about it?

When you buy a non-UFC PPV, who's fighting in the main event? I'm sure nobody bought Affliction Banned to watch Josh Barnett KO a past his prime Pedro Rizzo. Really, would you have paid to—insert price here—if Arlovski/Rothwell was the main event? I wouldn't, and I love Andrei Arlovski.

The UFC needs competition. Every business needs competition. The UFC bought there main competition, but they couldn't nab it's biggest moneymaker. And I'm glad they didn't. Fedor is the one that got away, an I wouldn't want it any other way.
