What It Means
The Texans are able to lock up one of the league's most dynamic playmakers without being forced to use their franchise tag. That will allow them to keep another potential free agent from hitting the open market if they so choose.
Foster has established himself as an elite ball-carrier ever since bursting onto the scene two years ago. He's one of the main reasons Houston was able to make its first trip to the playoffs in franchise history after several close calls in previous years.
Keeping him together with Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson will ensure the Texans have enough weapons on offense to be a perennial playoff contender.
What Happens Next?
Houston's front office will have to work quickly to determine if there's another player worth using the franchise tag on before the deadline, which is today at 4 p.m. ET. Foster was the most likely candidate before today's extension was reached.
The agreement also ensures there will be no holdout heading into training camp. Whenever a team uses the tag, there's always a chance the player decides to wait for a long-term extension. It isn't clear if Foster was planning on that route, but it's a moot point now.
Most importantly, the Texans now have their franchise running back locked up. That means they can focus on upgrading other positions through the draft and free agency to keep moving toward their ultimate Super Bowl goal.
