UFC on FX 2 Results: What We Learned from Benavidez vs. Urushitani
What We’ll Remember About This Fight
Joseph Benavidez looks amazing at flyweight.
After controlling Yashuhiro Urushitani for the majority of the first round and almost locking in a submission as time expired, Benavidez came out and clocked Urushitani with a big shot and followed up with some devastating ground-and-pound for a second-round TKO at UFC on FX 2 on Friday night.
Now set to fight Demetrious Johnson in he first ever UFC flyweight title fight, Benavidez is looking to stake his claim as the best 125-pound fighter in the world.
What We Learned About Joseph Benavidez
Benavidez is as good as we thought he would be at his natural weight.
A lot of people have called Benavidez the uncrowned flyweight champion for years, and he showed everyone else why tonight, showing off some excellent striking, wrestling and jiu-jitsu.
He said he thought he would be more powerful at flyweight, and it appears he was right; if he has that kind of knockout power in his arsenal permanently, he will become even more dangerous.
What We Learned About Yashuhiro Urushitani
Urushitani didn’t look bad in his UFC debut, but he will have to work on his grappling defense for his next bout.
Once Benavidez got him to the ground, he ended up in a bad position almost immediately and was forced to defend himself instead of attack for the majority of the fight.
If Urushitani can force fighters to stand and trade with him, he still has a chance at earning a flyweight title shot someday.
What’s Next for Benavidez
We already know this one, Benavidez will take on Demetrious Johnson for the flyweight title.
What’s Next for Urushitani
A step down in competition is inevitable at this point, but a fight against the winner of Louis Gaudinot and John Lineker would make a lot of sense.
