2012 NFL Free Agents: Players Jacksonville Jaguars Should Avoid

David LevinJun 7, 2018

Even before the end of the NFL season, there has been plenty of discussion about free agency and players who will be available in the offseason, both for the teams that need a makeover and those that need just one player to make a playoff or Super Bowl run.

Now, the wait is almost over, and in 10 days, there will be 32 general managers who think it is Christmas morning, and Santa Claus is letting them have their pick of the litter.

While Jacksonville Jaguars fans been salivating about the idea of Marques Colston or Harry Douglas or even someone like Mario Williams looking great on the grass at EverBank Field, there are some players who may not mesh well with the psychology of the team and would make matters in the locker room a real mess.

Here are some players the Jaguars should avoid in free agency.

Randy Moss

Is he on? Is he off? And how would he feel about working with a relatively new passer?

If Randy Moss comes back to the NFL fully committed to working with the Jaguars, he could be a big help. But a sullen man can hurt Blaine Gabbert's success.

Half of Moss is better than anything on the team's roster right now. But management would have to weigh the option of signing him.

Jeremy Shockey

Jeremy Shockey is talented but isn't the right fit for this team.

The Jaguars need more production from the tight end position, and having someone with talent opposite Marcedes Lewis would be helpful.

But with Shockey's penchant for partying and his big mouth, this might not be the right match.

Mike Wallace

Signing Mike Wallace would solve a lot of the Jaguars' receiving issues.

But it also means the Jaguars would surrender the team's first-round pick, and for everything Wallace is, he is not worth the seventh pick in the draft.

It would also mean that the team would look in the draft for more receivers and wouldn't be committed to helping holes that still exist in the defense.

John Abraham

John Abraham may have destroyed the Jaguars in a Thursday night game this past season, but that is no reason to sign this guy to a long-term contract.

There are 34 years on those legs, and there's wear and tear on that body.

He could be a situational pass-rusher for a team, but having him as an everyday starter is a bit too much to ask when the Jags are looking for maximum effort for 16 weeks straight.

Mike Tolbert

5 of 8

Mike Tolbert runs like a human bowling ball. He knocks over defenders and works on special teams. He also catches the ball pretty well out of the backfield.

Where have we heard this before?

He isn't as good as Maurice Jones-Drew, but he does have a similar style. If the Jaguars are looking for running back depth, they should look for more of a taller, outside-the-tackles type, not a similar player to what they already have.

Brandon Lloyd

Brandon Lloyd has a mouth than runs like a hamster on a wheel.

When he is good, he is pretty good. When he is bad, there are so many excuses.

One might think he is an Andre Rison-type receiver. But Rison and his mouth were run out of the league.

Signing Lloyd would also mean that the other top-tier receivers have no interest in coming to Jacksonville.

Terrell Thomas

7 of 8

The Jaguars need defensive backfield help, but Terrell Thomas had a knee injury this year.

With all of the injury issues in the secondary this season, and the problems with Aaron Kampman, maybe the Jaguars should stay away from players who already have a red flag by their name.

Alex Smith

8 of 8

If Alex Smith is on the Jaguars' radar, this means two things.

First, the team has given up on Blaine Gabbert, and it wants to find a veteran arm to help mold this team into a West Coast offense.

Second, it means the team could not lure someone like Jake Delhomme or Kyle Orton to Jacksonville to compete with Gabbert.

Personally, I would love to see someone like Jason Campbell or Kyle Boller, who have been starters and are younger than the two mentioned above, in Jacksonville.

Either way, the Jaguars will be signing a veteran passer.
