NBA Rumors: Cavaliers Would Be Fools to Hang on to Ramon Sessions

Jun 7, 2018

The Cleveland Cavaliers drafted Kyrie Irving with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 draft, and he has spent this season making it abundantly clear that the Cavs made a smart pick. They're going to be set at point guard for a while.

Meanwhile, the Cavs have this other point guard who is also pretty good...

Ramon Sessions' name has been showing up in trade rumors for several weeks at this point. The latest rumors suggest that there's a very real possibility Sessions will be traded—as well he should be.

The Cavs are a flawed team, but Sessions is a tradeable asset they can use to make themselves less flawed.

A source told Sam Amico of FoxSportsOhio.com that "it’ll be a miracle" if Sessions is still with the Cavs after the March 15th trade deadline.

"The Cavs really respect and admire him," said Amico's source. "They wouldn’t be against keeping him. But it‘s a tough situation. Kyrie (Irving) is the point guard of the future there, and Ramon could go somewhere else and start."

The notion that Sessions could start elsewhere also reached Alex Kennedy of HOOPSWORLD:

"

Teams continue to express interest in Ramon Sessions. Many executives see him as a starting point guard. Cavs are weighing their options.

There's definitely enough evidence to suggest that Sessions could be used as a starting point guard. He has never spent a full season as a starter, but he has plenty of starts under his belt and has always been a player who's put up good numbers coming off the bench.

If you listen to the NBA rumor mill long enough, it becomes obvious that there are a handful of teams out there that are desperate to land a point guard. Peter Vecsey of the New York Post reported this week that the Los Angeles Lakers have called the Cavs about Sessions, and so have the Sacramento Kings.

The Lakers' desire for a new point guard has become common knowledge. Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak even fanned the flames himself, when he said in February that he would love to acquire a point guard, preferably one who's 25 years old.

Sessions doesn't turn 26 until April, just sayin'.

It obviously doesn't have to be the Lakers. The point is that the Cavaliers will find somebody to take Sessions off their hands if they decide to trade him, and they're soon going to find out who is desperate enough to fork over a nice package to get him.

The Cavs need to strike while the iron is hot here. They'll be sacrificing valuable depth, yes, but it's not like their depth at the point guard spot is doing them any good—they're 13-20.

The Cavs need to build a team around Irving. If trading the guy behind Irving allows them to do that, then so be it.
