Algarve Cup 2012: Dominating Win over Denmark Great Start for US Women
The United States Women's National soccer team destroyed Denmark in their opening game of the 2012 Algarve Cup, which is exactly how they needed to start off the tournament.
With a 5-0 victory, team USA solidified their place as the favorites, reminding everyone how dangerous they can be.
Despite the big win, head coach Pia Sundhage told the Associated Press that, "It wasn’t easy, I really want to emphasize that."
Sundhage also had high praise for the team's rising star, Alex Morgan.
"During the World Cup she helped the team tremendously coming off the bench. She will help this team being on the field for 90 minutes for many games, I think. For young players, there will be ups and downs, but her speed and her technique is better than a year ago, and she’s a goal scorer, that’s for sure.
"
Morgan scored twice, and Sydney Leroux, Abby Wambach and Carli Lloyd each put one in the back of the net as well.
Now a starter, Morgan is sure to shine for the rest of the tournament and kicking things off with such an impressive victory will give her an immense amount of confidence moving forward.
In fact, this blowout victory will prompt the entire team to feel great as the tournament goes on, which is bad news for the other teams competing.
Being in Group B will be a challenge, as team USA has to get through Japan—the team that beat in the Women's World Cup a year ago.
Teams USA's next match will be against Norway, who lost 2-1 against Japan. Morgan, Wambach and the others won't get a chance at revenge over Japan until next Monday.
That will be the first time they have faced Japan since losing the World Cup final match. Emotions will be high in that game, but beginning the tournament in such strong fashion is a great sign of things to come for the United States Women's National soccer team.
