Chicago Cubs: Why the Rumor of Home Games at U.S. Cellular Field Was Insane
With the Chicago Cubs possibly doing some renovations to Wrigley Field over the years, many have speculated what would come of the team if they actually had to vacate the historic landmark for a year.
Well, as reported by NBC Chicago a few weeks back, there were rumors that the team could actually take their talents (we are talking 2013!) to the South Side to play in the Chicago White Sox' U.S. Cellular field when the stadium undergoes some major renovations around the time of the 2013 season.
According to the report: "Workers at U.S. Cellular tell a different story [than the Cubs' denial]. They say they are being warned of a much busier 2013 season (as in, prepare for double the games)."
According to that same source, the information has stood to be false, as Cubs officials have never even brought up the idea.
If that isn't enough to convince you, here are five reasons why this idea has no legitimacy.
Plenty of Time to Start in the Fall
1 of 5Given the state of the Chicago Cubs for this season and likely a few more to come, this team will not be getting a taste of the postseason anytime soon—at least by 2013.
With that in mind, the team will have plenty of time to get things started early on in the fall, as one can expect that the Cubs will not be making a trip to the postseason.
Perhaps the team will be strong early on in 2013; the Ricketts can always postpone the construction. The likelihood of that happening during the next year isn't anything close to a reality, though.
Given that the winter is still construction time in Chicago, it shouldn't be too hard for the team to start working on the stadium during the offseason.
Miller Park
2 of 5If the Chicago Cubs were to play elsewhere in 2012, they wouldn't likely play all of their home games in U.S. Cellular.
Rather, they would probably split it up between a couple ballparks. The most likely of all destinations would be Miller Park, home of the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Cubs wouldn't like to put that much weight on any team's staff, so designating all of their home games to one other stadium would be insane.
Not to mention, when the Cubs play up North, they tend to outshine Brewer fans anyway.
Can't Take the Risk
3 of 5In a hypothetical world, could you imagine what would happen if the Chicago Cubs won the World Series while calling another ballpark home?
What would the team do? Beyond that, would they officially just move on the from park?
Not even worth the risk.
Title or no title, the Cubs just cannot run the risk of moving on from Wrigley Field.
At least that is the perspective from most true fans.
But who knows? Perhaps the team would step back into the historic field given they already got the monkey off their back.
Jerry Reinsdorf
4 of 5While Chicago White Sox owner Jerry Reisndorf likely loves money—OK, he does—one thing he despises much too much is the Chicago Cubs.
Dating all the way back to 1990, Reinsdorf told Newsweek:
"The North Siders always tended to look down on South Siders. The White Sox were shots-and beers. The Cubs were martinis, very dry. Part of being a White Sox fan is you hate the Cubs.
"
You think that guy is going to fold now? Yeah, not likely.
Reinsdorf would probably rather see the Cubs play at Thillens Stadium all year than his own ballpark.
It Is the White Sox!
5 of 5This picture is too great to just look at once, so it will close out the slideshow as well.
The main reason why this would never happen is for one simple reason: Both teams hate each other.
Cubs fans don't get along with White Sox fans, and vice versa. There are always exceptions to the rule, but for the most part, they don't like each other stepping onto one another's turf.
The same can be said about many rivalries, but given the monikers that each team has adapted over the years, both fanbases are polar opposites.
The Cubs may need to find a spot to play sometime down the road, but they will only show up to the Cell for one series a season.
