Arizona State Football: Updating Player Performances from the NFL Combine
With the NFL Combine in the books, the Arizona State Sun Devils that participated are now one step closer to completing their life-long dreams of playing in the NFL.
Only six Sun Devils were at the combine, and while quarterback Brock Osweiler did not participate in the activities, we got a good idea of what to expect once the draft rolls around.
Here is a look at what we can now gather following the Sun Devils' performances at this year's combine.
Brock Osweiler, Quarterback
1 of 6With a foot injury keeping him out of the combine drills, Sun Devils junior quarterback Brock Osweiler didn't do anything more then market himself while getting measured.
It will remain to be seen how Osweiler will stack up with the rest of the competition when the draft actually rolls around, but for now it isn't so clear where he stands with the rest of the competition.
Some have seen him as a potential first-round pick, but this will likely set him back. He does only have 15 career starts, so the 6'7" QB still has a lot of people to impress.
Jamaar Jarrett, Defensive End
2 of 6With the defensive line having some serious depth at this year's combine and draft, Sun Devils DE Jamaar Jarrett was going up against some tough competition.
While he didn't do terrible, he also didn't stand out.
He ran a 40-yard dash time of 5.02 seconds, which isn't exactly eye opening. He also only had 21 reps in the bench press, as well as mediocre results in the vertical and broad jumps.
While Jarrett was never early round talent, he has the potential to be a nice piece for any team's depth as a late-round pick.
Garth Gerhart, Center
3 of 6Sun Devils center Garth Gerhart didn't have an amazing combine, but his numbers were respectable and will likely keep him in the talk for his position.
Gerhart ran the 40 in 5.42 seconds, while only having 25 reps on the bench. While the 40 isn't important, teams likely would have wanted to see a little more from his bench press set.
Teams can never use too many centers, and considering how much of a leader Gerhart has been for many years, many teams may look to nab him in the later rounds of Day 2 of the draft.
Omar Bolden, Cornerback
4 of 6It would have been nice to see cornerback Omar Bolden run at this year's combine, but it appears that the torn ligament he sustained before the 2011 season was going to keep him out of such drills.
The Sun Devils former stud corner and return man has a lot of ground to make up, and while he respectfully benched 24 reps at the combine, his speed, as well as lateral quickness and agility still have many question marks surrounding his value.
Bolden may not find himself getting picked in the draft, but expect teams to give him a shot before the season gets underway. If he can prove himself, the Sun Devil can end up being a real steal for any team that is willing to give him the time of day.
Gerell Robinson, Wide Receiver
5 of 6After posting terrific numbers this past season for the Sun Devils, 6'3" receiver Gerell Robinson is looking to enter the fold at this year's draft.
There is no doubt that talent at the receiver position is out the door, so it certainly won't be easy for this Pac-12 stud to make his way into the early parts of the draft.
He showed some nice speed, especially for his size, running a 4.62 40, while also have a vertical jump of 35.5" and a broad jump of 113".
Robinson is definitely a nice piece for any team that is interested, but it will remain to be seen how far his name will fall after the other big-time playmaking receivers entering this year's draft.
Vontaze Burfict, Middle Linebacker
6 of 6Things are just getting worse and worse for the Sun Devils junior middle linebacker Vontaze Burfict.
A former top five projected pick, Burfict has perhaps fallen out of the first round at this point in time.
He posted a pretty iffy 40 time, 5.09 seconds, which was not as quick as many had thought for the freakishly athletic playmaker.
The thing that perhaps hurt him most at the combine was his mouth, as he was quoted talking trash about the ASU coaching staff.
According to Bruce Feldman of CBS:
"“I played average,” Burfict explained to reporters in Indy. “I could've played better. That's what hurt me at times. The coaches kind of messed me up. I didn't know if I would start a game or be benched. It hurt me, but I tried to fight through it.”
"
Not exactly what coaches want to see, but considering the potential that Burfict has, some team may decide to roll the dice late in the first or early in the second.
