PGA Tour Fantasy Golf: Previewing the Honda Classic

John MillerJun 7, 2018

After having two events last week, we are back to just a single tournament this week. The Honda Classic is played on the Champion Course at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Rory Sabbatini is the defending champion. The winner this week will take home just over $1 million.

PGA National is one of the toughest tracks on the PGA Tour so we're going to be looking for consistent performers with a strong history here. Strong putting is always a plus, but we're looking for golfers with a solid all-around game this week.

Group A

Keegan Bradley (Starting)—When looking for a golfer with all-around skills you don't need to look much further than Keegan Bradley who currently ranks first on the PGA Tour in All-Around Ranking. He's coming off of a decent showing in the Match Play tournament last week and a second place finish the week before. Bradley missed the cut here last year (+4) in his only appearance at the Honda Classic.

Y.E. Yang (Bench)—Neither Yang nor Rory Sabbatini have played particularly well this season but both have a good history year. Yang has looked better the past two weeks and he finished second here last year. He makes a nice bench complement to Keegan Bradley this week.

Worth Noting: Kyle Stanley, Charles Howell III and Spencer Levin could also be worth using here.

Group B

Rory McIlroy (Starting)—Despite losing in the Match Play finals last week, McIlroy is the hottest golfer on the planet right now. His limited PGA Tour schedule means that you need to use him when he's in the field. That's he's this hot right now is a complete bonus.

Lee Westwood (Starting)—Much like Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood is a phenomenal golfer who plays a limited PGA Tour schedule. Westwood has had some success here, finished Tied for ninth in 2010.

Tiger Woods (Bench)—I don't anticipate using a bench player in Group B this week. And Tiger's putter has been a mess recently. But it feels like Tiger is on the verge of a breakthrough and being on such a tough course could bring out the best in him.

Mark Wilson (Bench)—Wilson has been all over the place so far in 2012, missing cuts, winning a tournament and everything in between. He doesn't have a particularly good history here, but if he gets hot you never know what could happen. Again, he's a perfect bench player in a week where I don't anticipate needing him.

Worth Noting: After the top options the rest of Group B falls off pretty quickly. Robert Allenby and Justin Rose are also worth considering here.

Group C

Charl Schwartzel (Starting)—Schwartzel is another top European player who plays a limited PGA Tour schedule. He looked very sharp in the Match Play tournament last weekend and is worth using here despite not having a history here.

Ben Crane (Bench)—Crane has quietly been very solid in 2012 with three top-10 finishes and only one missed cut. He finished third here in his last appearance in 2009. If Schwartzel falters, Crane could be an excellent fallback option.

Now, who do you pick in your Weekly Survivor/Eliminator/Earnings League?

If you wanted to go with Rory McIlroy, that's perfectly fine. I might elect to save him for an upcoming major, but a purse worth over $1 million is nothing to sneeze at.

Otherwise, I'm inclined to once again go with a golfer who makes limited PGA Tour appearances. In this case that means either Lee Westwood or Charl Schwartzel.

Westwood has a history here while Schwartzel does not. After being burned taking Westwood in majors in the past, I'm inclined to use him here after ranking him behind only McIlroy last week.

I'm rolling with Lee Westwood this week.

For the record, I've already used: Bryce Molder, Steve Marino, Bill Haas, D.A. Points, Martin Laird, Hunter Mahan, K.J. Choi, Rory McIlroy and Jarrod Lyle.

Good luck to all this week. If you have any comments or questions, please use the comments feature or reach out to me on Twitter.
