Klitschko vs. Mormeck: Klitschko Will Have No Problem with Overmatched Mormeck
After months of waiting, Wladimir Klitschko and Jean-Marc Mormeck will finally face off on Saturday. Unfortunately for boxing fans, the extended delay won't make the fight any more competitive, as Klitschko will dominate his inferior opponent.
“Dr. Steelhammer” had to push back the original date because of a kidney stone, but he's now back to full strength and ready to resume his storied career. He holds a 56-3 career record and hasn't been defeated since 2004, when Lamon Brewster knocked him out.
Since then, Klitschko has gone on a 14-fight winning streak, most recently beating David Haye by unanimous decision in July. There just aren't many boxers in the division who can match his terrific power, even at 35 years old.
Age won't be an issue for Klitschko this time around, since he's actually the younger combatant. Mormeck is 39. He holds a 36-4 career record, but few of his opponents during that time have been as talented as the Ukrainian big man.
Klitschko simply has too many weapons for Mormeck to overcome. Give him credit for taking this fight at his age, but he'll be feeling the repercussions for that decision on Sunday morning.
In reality, this fight is a perfect example of the problems boxing continues to face.
Most fans don't want to watch Klitschko steamroll another opponent. He has done that enough times in his career. Those who keep supporting the sport want to see competitive bouts and rivalries with a chance of making boxing popular again.
It has lost a lot of momentum in recent years, especially with the rise of MMA, and fights like the one everybody will witness on Saturday aren't going to help the cause.
A weakened heavyweight division definitely plays a roll in lackluster matchups. However, so does the fact that fighter's seem more than content to sit back and keep collecting paychecks on minor main events instead of going for the huge payday that comes with higher competition.
There's no easy fix, but hopefully the next generation of boxers will be more willing to put their ego aside and take on bigger fights. It's the only chance boxing has of becoming popular with mainstream sports fans again.
Klitschko vs. Mormeck certainly isn't going to do it. If anything, it will only make more fans abandon the sport in favor of something new.
