NFL Combine 2012: 5 Prospects Who Failed Miserably in Indianapolis

Ryan RudnanskyFeb 29, 2012

There are the prospects who disappointed at the 2012 NFL combine, and then there are the prospects who flat-out failed.

There were plenty of prospects headed into this year's combine whose stock was hanging in the balance.

Five of those prospects fell off a cliff.

5. Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford

Jonathan Martin will probably be the third offensive tackle selected in the draft, which isn't half bad, but he can forget about being selected before Matt Kalil and Riley Reiff.

Martin came out flat in his workouts at the combine. He came out flat after saying he was the top tackle in the draft.

Martin's performance in Indy didn't exactly back up his words.

4. Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor

Like most pundits out there, I was very high on Kendall Wright before the combine. He appeared to have DeSean Jackson-like athleticism and speed this past season with the Bears and had no character concerns to speak of.

However, with a chance to gain some distance on Oklahoma State's Justin Blackmon at the combine, Wright ran the 40-yard dash in 4.61 seconds.

That, folks, is not very fast. In fact, Wright didn't even finish in the top 15 in the 40-yard dash and didn't come close to Travis Benjamin's top mark of 4.36 seconds.

3. Michael Brockers, DT, LSU

After playing just two seasons at LSU, it was obvious Michael Brockers was a work-in-progress headed into the combine.

However, what made Brockers a potential Top 10 pick was his upside.

Well, that upside wasn't on display at the combine. He ran the 40-yard dash in 5.36 seconds and weighed in at 322 points, 16 pounds heavier than when he declared.

It certainly doesn't help Brockers' case that the past two highly regarded LSU defensive linemen were Glenn Dorsey and Tyson Jackson.

2. Vontaze Burfict, LB, Arizona State

Vontaze Burfict scared a lot of his opponents when he played at ASU.

The only problem is that he's scaring a lot of NFL scouts away, too.

Burfict has the size, strength and range to be a dynamic inside linebacker in the NFL, but he has serious character concerns. He drew numerous personal foul penalties while with the Sun Devils, some in critical moments of games.

What did he do to alleviate concerns?

Not much.

During team interviews at the combine, Burfict blamed his coaches for his last season. He also ran the 40-yard dash in 5.09 seconds, worst among linebackers.

He's apparently not as athletic as we thought and he's just as out of control.

No thank you.

1. Quinton Coples, DE/DT, North Carolina

Quinton Coples has character concerns and he performed poorly in drills at the combine.

How is he being considered a Top 10 pick?

After looking downright lazy in his senior season at UNC, Coples was mediocre in the broad jump (109 inches), vertical jump (31.5 inches) and bench press (19 reps).

For a prospect who is supposed to have the strength to be a defensive tackle and the quickness to be an electric 3-4 defensive end, Coples certainly didn't show much.

I figured some foolish team would grab Coples in the first round after the combine, but after he disappointed at the combine, I wouldn't be surprised if he fell out of the first round.
