2012 NFL Combine: Day 6 Winners and Losers
It's Day 6 of the National Football League Scouting Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, and Tuesday, the final group of players took to the field as college football's top defensive backs gathered to display their skills in front of coaches and scouts from across the NFL.
As was the case with such combine standouts as Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin and flops such as linebacker Vontaze Burfict of Arizona State, some players blew up while others just blew.
Here's a quick recap of the highlights and lowlights of the combine's last day of workouts.
Winner: Stephon Gilmore, CB, South Carolina
1 of 5Cornerback Stephon Gilmore of South Carolina enjoyed a productive junior season for the Gamecocks, tallying 46 tackles, four interceptions, a sack and a forced fumble, but the 6'0", 190-pounder still needed a strong showing in Indy if he harbored any aspirations of being a first round pick in April's draft.
Gilmore got that strong showing, turning in a sturdy 4.4 second 40-yard dash time, displaying excellent leaping ability and significantly increasing the chances that one of the cornerback-needy teams picking towards the end of the first round will give him a hard look.
Loser: Trumaine Johnson, CB, Montana
2 of 5Montana cornerback Trumaine Johnson was one of the more polarizing players at his position entering the 2012 combine, as his supporters lauded the 6'2", 204-pound senior's blend of speed and size, while his detractors decried his arrest last October and suggested that Johnson might be best served by a switch to free safety.
That switch is looking more and more like a real possibility, as although Johnson displayed excellent strength with 19 bench press reps, his speed was apparently in his other pants, as Johnson managed only a lethargic 4.61 seconds in the 40-yard dash.
Winner: Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama
3 of 5Much like Trumaine Johnson, North Alabama cornerback Janoris Jenkins was a player that generated a fair amount of debate headed into the combine, with the physical talents of the 5'10", 193-pound senior occupying one side of the aisle while Jenkins' checkered past sat on the other.
Jenkins didn't do himself any favors when he revealed in interviews that he has already fathered four children with three women, but luckily for Jenkins, his athletic ability did the talking Tuesday, with a strong 4.46 second 40 time and good showing in position drills.
Loser: George Iloka, S, Boise State
4 of 5With top safety prospect Mark Barron of Alabama unable to participate in the combine due to recovery from surgery to repair a sports hernia, Indianapolis represented an excellent opportunity for other safeties such as Harrison Smith of Notre Dame and Boise State's George Iloka to bolster their draft stock with a strong performance.
Harrison made the most of his chance, but Iloka, who had 58 tackles and a forced fumble a season ago, faltered, and his 4.66 second 40-yard dash time will do nothing to quiet those that think that the 6'4", 225-pound Iloka could be limited to an "in-the-box" role as a professional.
Winner: Josh Robinson, CB, Central Florida
5 of 5It would be remiss to assemble a list of combine winners and losers without including this year's "winner" of the 2012 edition of the "dash for cash," and no player this year turned in a faster 40 time than Josh Robinson of Central Florida, who clocked in at a blistering 4.33 seconds.
The 5'10", 199-pound junior cornerback from Sunrise, Fla. also turned in the best broad jump and second best vertical jump at his position, and while Robinson would need time to develop in the NFL, the raw athletic ability he displayed Tuesday undoubtedly sent Robinson's draft stock skyrocketing.
