NFL Combine 2012 Results: 5 Winners and 5 Losers from Scouting Combine

Zach KruseJun 7, 2018

The following are the winners and losers from the 2012 NFL Scouting Combine:

WINNER: NT Dontari Poe, Memphis (A+)

After putting up a combine-high 44 bench reps, Poe stole the show during defensive line drills on Monday. The 346-pounder ran the 40-yard dash in under five seconds and had leaps of 29.5" (vertical) and 9'9" (broad). He moved like a man that weighed 250 pounds, not pushing 350. His status in the first round should be solidified.

LOSER: CB Janoris Jenkins, North Alabama (C)

The workouts and drills weren't the issue for Jenkins. The worries remain off the field, as Jenkins has three drug arrests for marijuana possession, four kids by three different women and a bar fight on his record. In a league that is getting more and more character-driven, Jenkins did very little to settle any concerns about what he may pull away from the football field.

WINNER: LB Luke Kuechly, Boston College (A)

The college production for Kuechly was sky-high, and the film showed a guy that was always around the football making plays. The worries coming into the combine were how Kuechly's athleticism would translate to the next level. After Monday, those worries are no more. Kuechly ran the 40-yard dash in 4.50 seconds and had a 38-inch vertical leap, each of which were among the top marks for linebackers. He's a sure-fire first-round pick that looks capable of being a top-level starter early in his NFL career.

LOSER: LB Vontaze Burfict, Arizona State (F)

What a nightmare the combine turned into for one of the draft's most unpredictable players. While Burfict's maturity has always been in question, the athleticism was seen as a crutch that NFL teams could lean on early at the next level. Not anymore. Burfict ran the 40-yard dash in an alarming 5.06 seconds, a number that put him behind the majority of offensive and defensive linemen in Indianapolis. How far could he fall now? His junior year film would be the only reason to take him before the fifth or sixth round.

WINNER: WR Stephen Hill, Georgia Tech (A-)

The 6'4", 215-pound Hill blew away Sunday's receiving workouts by stopping his 40 clock at 4.36 seconds. That kind of size and speed combination is what NFL decision-makers fall in love with on a yearly basis. After blazing the 40-yard dash, Hill looked crisp during the drills while displaying soft hands. He's still raw, but there's a lot of athletic potential here that a team or two will certainly overvalue.

LOSER: WR Alshon Jeffery, South Carolina (C+)

The combine got off to a smashing start for Jeffery when he weighed in at a slender 217 pounds. Any rumor about him ballooning to 230 or more pounds were completely unfounded. However, there are still question marks aplenty after Jeffery failed his draft interviews and then didn't run or workout. Jeffery's South Carolina pro day will have to answer a lot of questions for his stock to regain its traction.

WINNER: DE/OLB Nick Perry, USC (A)

Perry proved in Indianapolis that he's a perfect fit for both defensive fronts. A 4.50-second 40-yard dash should give 3-4 teams plenty of confidence that he can be a dynamic edge rusher. But there's also enough strength in the 271-pounder to think he can hold up as a 4-3 defensive end, as Perry bench-pressed 225 pounds 35 times and had a 38.5" vertical leap. He should be a top-15 pick come April.

LOSER: OT Mike Adams, Ohio State (D+)

His 6'7", 323-pound frame is hard to ignore. However, after Indianapolis, there should be question marks about his want to be great. Adams only had 19 reps on the bench press and then came in at over 5.4 seconds in the 40-yard dash. Both are unacceptable numbers for a potential franchise left tackle. Mixed with his suspensions at Ohio State, Adams has an up-hill climb to be a first-rounder.

WINNER: WR Michael Floyd, Notre Dame (A-)

Floyd weighed in at a slim but solid 220 pounds, then nailed his 40-yard dash at an encouraging 4.47 seconds. His size (6'2") combined with playmaking straight-line speed make Floyd an instant candidate to be the draft's most impactful receiver. He should be the No. 2 receiver off the board in April, likely somewhere in the top 20 picks.

LOSER: WR Kendall Wright, Baylor (C-)

Wright had so much momentum coming into Indianapolis, but he took some steps back with a disappointing combine. At 5'10", 181 pounds, Wright ran the 40-yard dash in an official 4.61 seconds. You can debate that time all you want, but it's still scary for NFL teams to commit a first-round pick on a small receiver that didn't run well at the combine. Wright needs to erase some doubts at his Baylor pro day.

Bonus WINNERS: QB Robert Griffin III, Baylor (A+) / St. Louis Rams

You didn't really think I'd leave out the star of the combine, did you? After saying all the right things during the interview process, Griffin left NFL people's jaws on the Lucas Oil floor by running the 40-yard dash in 4.41 seconds. He also jumped out of the building at an impressive 39-inch vertical leap. Guess who won the most from Griffin's performance in Indy? The Rams, of course. Holders of the No. 2 pick, they now hold a gold mine of draft capital potential. They will rob a team of picks and players for the right to pick Griffin at No. 2 by April.
