Texas Football Recruiting 2012: Which Recruits Are Destined for Stardom?

Edwin WeathersbyJun 7, 2018

So today in our "stardom" series, we're going to take a look at some of the prime recruits in the Texas recruiting class for 2012. Mack Brown signed a top three class and held the No.1 spot for most of the marathon before falling a few slots on NSD.

However, once again, Brown and his staff hauled great talent that will surely help Texas in its quest to return to the top of the Big 12. For this read, I'm going to give you a couple recruits that I think will become stars in Austin.

Watch for the Offensive Line

1 of 6

Every few years it seems Texas really produces a solid OL in the NFL draft. For this 2012 recruiting class, I think three OLs have a chance to become the next great Longhorn OL.

OG Curtis Riser is one of the best 100 overall incoming freshmen this year, and that's remarkable since he's a guard. Riser is 6'5", 300 pounds and played OT for his high school team, but his frame, strength and short area athleticism scream OG.

Kennedy Estelle has future LT ability at 6'7" and 305 pounds. Estelle has solid knee bend, good agility, mirror ability and can recover well on an island.

Last is Camrhon Hughes, a 6'7", 270-pound OL that may have the highest ceiling out of all three. Hughes is a pretty good athlete, has solid foot quickness and with some seasoning, he should be a starter somewhere in the trenches.

5. Torshiro Davis, DE/OLB

Davis was a longtime LSU commit, but switched on NSD to sign with the Longhorns. He's a pass-rusher's pass-rusher, in the sense that getting to QB is what he does and what loves to do.

He's 6'3", 210 pounds, and I think has the ability to stand up and play a rush end position or bulk up a bit more and put his down as a weakside DE.

I'm not sure he'll ever be Brian Orakpo, but look for his pass-rush ability to stand out before he walks away form Austin.

4. Kendall Sanders, CB/WR

3 of 6

I think Sanders can be a star no matter where he plays: cornerback or wide receiver. He's an athlete with a great skill set for a stand out perimeter player.

Whether the 6'0", 175-pounder sees himself develop into a WR with good speed, separation quickness, hands and RAC ability...or...

He develops into a big and lean corner that uses his size and length to press at the line, hips and agility to mirror receivers and speed to carry them all over the field in coverage...

It is up to the coaches in Austin.

3. Cayleb Jones, WR

4 of 6

When's the last time Texas had a dominant WR? You can say Jordan Shipley, but I'm talking about a guy with size, speed, length, strength, just the whole package?

I'd say Roy Williams.

Well, Jones has a chance, emphasis on chance, to be the next dominant Longhorn WR. He's 6'2", close to 200 pounds and has good speed, great athleticism, leaping ability, quickness to separate and hands to snatch balls all over his frame.

I expect him to be the guy in the Longhorn passing game soon.

2. Malcom Brown, DT

5 of 6

I was very close to putting this man No.1. I really was. Brown impressed me mightily in the UA game, and I think he's a future star in Austin.

At 6'2", 280 pounds (I think he may be bigger than 280), Brown has excellent snap quickness, plays with good pad level, has the foot speed to blow by blockers and can play in the backfield.

He can combat the run by slipping creases, shedding blocks and has good speed to chase in pursuit.

Texas usually has great DTs, and I think Brown has a chance to be special.

1. Johnathan Gray, RB

6 of 6

Gray should unquestionably be a star one day for Texas. He'll share the load with Malcolm Brown at RB for a few seasons, but I think they will make a great tandem.

At 5'11", 195 pounds, Gray has all the tools to be a top flight RB in the Big 12. Vision, patience, awareness, instincts, burst to and through holes, speed to get to the edges, elusiveness, run strength, tackle-breaking ability and sheer production all make up traits of his game.

Look for him to be a superstar one day.
