Edmonton Capitals Withdraw from 2012 NAL Season

Devon TeepleJun 7, 2018

The independent leagues are a very different animal when it comes to the game of baseball.

It’s completely separate, independently owned and plays by its own rules. That is what makes it so special, but, at the same time so frustrating.

The North American Baseball League is entering year two of its plan to become the most prolific independent league in North America, but with it, comes setbacks and disappointment.

The Edmonton Capitals, reigning NAL champions, are suspending play for the 2012 seasons, much to the dismay of everyone involved.

Team governor Peter LaForge, as quoted in the Calgary Herald, doesn’t completely rule out a return.

“It is a tough decision," LaForge said. "We suspended the team for one year and we're working on finding a proper situation. It could include the NAL but it doesn't have to, under these circumstances."

With over 125,000 fans attending Capitals games this past year, you would think things would be on the up and up, except financial issues have struck many teams including the Rio Grande Valley Whitewings, who played the entire championship series in Edmonton.  Many other teams struggled for various reasons last season, and with only four teams registered to play in the Northern Division, the perception of the league could take a hit.

Rexall Sports and Entertainment (RSE) who owns the Capitals along with the Oilers and Oil Kings, has apparently wanted to switch leagues for some time now. Whether that is true, Edmonton is really taking a risk by cancelling their season.

As the league leader in attendance, there is an obvious market and high interest for the game, though there is always the possibility that fan support will slide if nothing is secured for 2013.

For now, it’s back to the drawing board and an opportunity for management to solidify themselves a spot for next year. Until then, let’s remember the Capitals for what they are: champions.
