Michigan Football Recruiting 2013: 5 Cornerbacks Who Would Make Great Wolverines
One of Michigan's many weaknesses during the Rich Rodriguez era was at cornerback.
The problem was mainly caused by injury and untimely attrition. Troy Woolfolk and J.T. Floyd missed extensive playing time, while Cullen Christian, J.T. Turner and Boubacar Cissoko left early.
With the graduation of Troy Woolfolk, only J.T. Floyd, Courtney Avery, Delonte Hollowell and Terrence Talbott remain from the Rodriguez regime.
Fortunately, new coach Brady Hoke was able to secure the services of Blake Countess, Raymon Taylor and Tamani Carter as the 2011 recruiting class wound down. Despite the 2012 class being an exceptional one, Terry Richardson was the only cornerback on the list.
The 2013 recruiting class is off to a great start with 13 verbal commitments, including Jourdan Lewis from Detroit Cass Tech. But Hoke is by no means finished.
Following are five cornerbacks who are definitely interested in the Wolverines. If Hoke has his way, more than one of them will eventually don a Michigan uniform.
Kendall Fuller—6'0", 185 Lbs, Our Lady Good Council HS, Olney, MD
1 of 5Kendall Fuller, a 4-star recruit from Olney, MD, is very high on Michigan's list. The problem is, he's also high on Virginia Tech's list where his brothers, Kyle and Corey, play.
But Kendall plans on carving out his own path.“Just because it’s a good fit for my brothers doesn’t mean it’s a good fit for me,” Fuller told Scout.com. “I have to see what schools are best for me rather than what’s best for them, and what they did.”
So what's the chance he might be swayed by former teammate Blake Countess, who's a starting cornerback at Michigan?
"Any time you've got a person like Blake telling you how good a program is gonna be, he's not going to lie to you. Fuller told Foxsports.com. "And by the year they just had, you cant really go against them."
Fuller, who's also been offered by Ohio State, Florida and Maryland among others, plans on visiting Michigan for the spring game.
Vernon Hargreaves III—5'11", 181 Lbs, Wharton HS, Tampa, FL
2 of 5One of the country's top high school players, Hargreaves would immediately transform Michigan's secondary into one of the best in the nation. He would join Blake Countess to become a tough one-two punch at cornerback.
The 5-star Hargreaves, ranked No. 3 overall, has a favorable opinion of the Wolverines.
"I’ve talked with Coach Jerry Montgomery (defensive line coach) and he is a cool dude, Hargreaves told Scout.com. I am just hoping to build a better relationship with him. I spoke with my parents about visiting and we might come up in the summer.
"
Landing Hargreaves won't be an easy task, however, since his dad coaches at South Florida. If that's not all, Urban Meyer is in the picture too, along with Southern Cal, Florida and Notre Dame.
Tim Harris—6'2", 170 Lbs, Varina HS, Richmond, VA
3 of 5A familiar school to Michigan fans, Varina has been one of the top schools in Virginia for many years. Former Michigan running back Brandon Minor and linebacker Marell Evans had outstanding careers at Varina.
Tim Harris, a tall cornerback at 6'2", has already impressed recruiters around the country.
Close to home, Harris has Virginia and Virginia Tech out front, but he has a visit scheduled to Michigan March 10. He also has offers from Tennessee, Rutgers and Ohio State.
Chris Hawkins—6'0", 170 Lbs, Rancho Cucamonga (HS), CA
4 of 5When Chris Hawkins visits Ann Arbor this spring, maybe Charles Woodson should be there, too. After all, why wouldn't he want to meet his hero?
"My idol is Charles Woodson," the 4-star cornerback told GoBlueWolverine.com.
Although several schools are interested in Hawkins, it looks like Michigan will be fighting it out with Stanford and Notre Dame. Michigan might have an advantage since Hawkins already mimics his game after Woodson, who led the Wolverines to a national co-championship in 1997.
“My coach said this year I can start doing more like him, blitzing off the edge, playing freely, sticking people in the slot sort of like a nickel back,” Hawkins added.
"I have good size, I'm 6-foot, 170 pounds. I also have long arms, and I'm rangy," he said. "I have good speed, too. I know Michigan said they want me as a corner and that's what I play now."
Cameron Walker—5'11", 180 Lbs, Loyola HS, Los Angeles, CA
5 of 5While he's only been offered by a few schools thus far, it was the first which might prove to be the clincher.
Cameron Walker. a yet-to-be ranked cornerback from Los Angeles, was delighted when he recently received a Michigan offer.
" Walker is also looking at UCLA and San Diego State.
The next five: Antwuan Davis, Bastrop, TX Cole Luke, Chandler, AZ Devin Butler, Washington, DC Tre' Bell, Jersey City, NJ Priest Willis, Tempe, AZ
