College Basketball: 5 Most Disappointing Teams This Season
The landscape of college basketball's Top 25 has changed considerably since the start of the season.
Teams that weren't given a second thought in the preseason are inching their way closer to the forefront of the voters' minds.
Others, who were anointed as conference champions and possible title contenders, are losing favor quickly—if they haven't already lost it.
Here is a look at the five most disappointing teams in college basketball this season.
Pitt Panthers 15-14
1 of 5A fixture in the Top 10 in the preseason, the Pitt Panthers started out 11-1 before a loss to Wagner on their home court sparked an eight-game losing streak.
Currently sitting at 15-14, after a four-game winning streak and now a five-game losing streak, a team that was once considered one of the top teams in the Big East is in serious trouble of not even making the NIT.
With the talent on its roster, however, I wouldn't be surprised if Pitt puts together a run to challenge for the secondary tournament's title—if they get invited.
Texas A&M 13-15
2 of 5Texas A&M was considered the biggest threat to end Kansas' streak of seven-straight Big 12 regular-season titles.
Instead, the Aggies struggled once the soft part of their schedule got tough.
Although they have battled injuries and various absences all season long, there is no excuse for a team regarded so highly in the preseason to be one rung from the bottom of their own conference.
UConn Huskies 17-11
3 of 5Following its amazing run through the Big East and NCAA tournaments on its way to a national championship last season, UConn was predicted to perform similarly this year.
After rolling through its non-conference schedule with a 12-1 record, before falling apart as it started conference play, the Huskies found it difficult to replace Kemba Walker.
He was their on-court and emotional leader, who left after his junior year for life in the NBA.
The continued health issues of head coach Jim Calhoun have to play a part during their down season as well.
UCLA Bruins 16-13
4 of 5Thought to at least have been sniffing the success they have had in recent years, the Bruins were voted into the preseason Top 20.
But after opening the season with losses to Loyola Marymount and Middle Tennessee, those sentiments evaporated quickly.
Head coach Ben Howland has a horde of talent at his disposal, but with no real leader on the team, the discipline instilled during practice disappears as the players step onto the court.
Butler Bulldogs 18-13
5 of 5After back-to-back national championship game losses, Butler has failed to capitalize in the recruiting department.
Given their current roster, the win-loss results don't surprise me, but I think it is safe to say that head coach Brad Stephens should have taken his resume as it stood last year and looked for a higher profile job.
Although still young, he can no longer ride the small window of success he's had with Butler.
