2012 NFL Draft: Players with Character Issues That Will Bust

Wes ODonnellFeb 27, 2012

This week's NFL Scouting Combine will give teams a chance to weed out the players with troubling character concerns.

Whether it be on-field troubles or off-field issues, there are players that come with a "buyer beware" tag that they will never overcome.

Unfortunately, some of the most tantalizing prospects are the ones you simply cannot trust. The following players are great prospects that will ultimately fall short.

Quinton Coples, DE, UNC

The nearly 6'6", 284-pounder is a gifted prospect with a ton of upside. He has the versatility to play inside or outside and he's athletic enough to dominate both.

By most accounts, Coples is a top 10 pick. He doesn't come without question marks, though.

Coples struggled in 2011 and there were even rumors of him selfishly telling coaches that he wouldn't move back to defensive tackle because it would hurt his draft stock. He also doesn't bring it consistently enough.

That type of nonsense won't be tolerated in the NFL. Coples needs to buy life at the next level or he'll quickly be pushed aside.

Vontaze Burfict, ILB, ASU

If the NFL doesn't mature Burfict nothing will. The Sun Devils linebacker is one of the more physically gifted players at his position and he plays with great fire, but he needs to grow up.

Sliding out of the first round may actually be a blessing in disguise if he were to take it seriously.

Teams know he's a hot head with a propensity for disobeying coaches and freelancing on the reg. Like Coples' situation, that won't be tolerated in the NFL.

He's the definition of a boom-or-bust pick.

Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina

The slimmed-down Jeffery is a boom-or-bust as well. He didn't run in Indianapolis but he did prove he wasn't fat like the rumors said.

His potential separation problems aren't his only question mark. Jeffery will only be as good as he wants to be. His future in the league is tied directly to his attitude.

There were quarterback issues in Columbia, but he still should have been better this year. It wouldn't be surprising if Jeffery washed out of the league without much an impact.
