NFL Combine 2012: College Studs Whose Stock Is Plummeting

Adam WellsJun 7, 2018

Now that the madness of the NFL Scouting Combine is over, we can examine the players who had a rough time making things happen in shorts and a t-shirt.

Since this was the first--and best--chance for players to make an impression on scouts and evaluators, it was imperative they left their mark in Indianapolis.

Unfortunately, not all players were up to the challenge and find themselves at the mercy of their college tape.

Here are the players who suffered the most at the Combine.

Vontaze Burfict, LB, Arizona State

No player in Indianapolis hurt his stock more than Burfict. Looking at him on tape, you can see a potential star at the next level with raw athleticism.

But then he ran a 5.09 40-yard dash and had a lackluster broad jump. He was already sliding down draft boards because of a questionable attitude and work ethic. Now, there is almost no chance that Burfict will be selected in the first round.

It might even be too much to expect Burfict to go in the second round, unless he can miraculously convince teams that someone else posed as him at the workout.

Mike Adams, OT, Ohio State

Not too long ago, Adams was thought to be a first-round pick. His combination of size, speed and experience made him one of the more intriguing offensive linemen in the draft.

But all of that might have been undone by his performance at the Combine. Adams struggled on the bench press and did nothing to redeem himself in the 40-yard dash or broad jump.

While he will still be an early-round selection, Adams' chances of being one of the first 32 players selected took a huge hit this weekend.

Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor

Even though he did not have any problems catching passes, which looked like a potential weakness, Wright was a huge disappointment in the 40-yard dash.

The Baylor receiver put up a 40-time of 4.61 seconds. There are worse things that could have happened during his workout, but teams are not going to hold him in high regard as a speed-receiver.

His biggest saving grace came when he caught all of the passes thrown in his direction. Even if he doesn't have the speed teams were looking for, he did prove he can be a capable possession receiver. It still won't be good enough to get him in the first round.

Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina

Not to keep piling on wide receivers, but it was not a good day for a few potential first-rounders. Jeffery has had to field questions about his weight for the longest time.

While he showed up in good shape (216 pounds), Jeffery decided not to workout.

When teams already have questions about you, it's probably not the smartest idea to walk away from a job interview without giving a real reason.
