Daytona 500 Odds: Underdog Drivers to Put Your Money on

Tim KeeneyJun 7, 2018

The Daytona 500, easily the biggest event in NASCAR, may have been postponed for at least a day, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

For one, you have more time to dump your well-earned money into more bets you likely won't win.

...Yay!

Fear not, though, because here's a look at three underdogs who make for good bets in the big race. At worst, one of these bets could make up for the rest of your losses.

....Again, yay!

A.J Allmendinger (30/1)

It's still a fairly big unknown regarding whether or not Allmendinger can replace Kurt Busch's big shoes at Penske Racing, but a few things are clear.

First, Allmendinger actually led a bunch of races last season, he just couldn't quite finish them off. With a better car, it's not far-fetched to think he'll improve on his 11th-place finish in this race last year.

Second, he has quite possibly the best name in NASCAR. Allmendinger. And his nickname is "The Dinger." I, for one, am not betting against that.

There are a lot worse picks with more generous odds.

Danica Patrick (40/1)

It makes me a little nervous that everyone thinks the key to this year's Daytona 500 is to simply avoid a wreck and Danica Patrick is, well, reckless.

She's incredibly aggressive and it's likely that she ends up doing something stupid, but with these odds, I'm willing to take the gamble.

I'm comfortable taking the gamble because A) she is finished with IndyCar racing and has all her focus on NASCAR and B) she is notoriously better on bigger tracks like Daytona.

Patrick has been improving every year and it wouldn't surprise me if she made the big jump this season.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (60/1)

Hey, Trevor Bayne won this race last year, so anything can happen. Stenhouse is my pick to be this year's Bayne.

The 24-year-old won the Nationwide series last year and now makes the jump to the Sprint Cup in the impressive No. 6 Roush/Fenway Racing Ford car. The Sprint Cup is a different beast than Nationwide, but Stenhouse clearly has skills behind the wheel, and he has a car that could win this thing.

I'm sold.
