20 College Football Coaches with Short Fuses

Dan VastaJun 1, 2018

Which current coaches in the country have the shortest fuses?

There are several coaches who aren't afraid to let their players and coaches know how frustrated they are.

Many of the elite in the game can let their emotions get the best of them, but let it be said that many of these coaches on this list are the best in the game.

I could have chosen several coaches on this list, but I feel these 20 coaches will stand out the most for the 2012 season.

Follow Dan Vasta on Twitter.

Brian Kelly, Notre Dame

1 of 20

Brian Kelly has not had the breakthrough year in South Bend that most have been expecting him to have, so it is imperative the Irish go off in 2012.

If not, then Kelly may literally blow another gasket similar to the ones he had against South Florida and Michigan. His face was so red I wasn’t sure if he was human for a minute.

That is the stress that comes along with the head coaching job with arguably the most prestigious program in sports, but it is Kelly’s job to bring a relaxed presence that makes the doubters eat some crow.

Nick Saban, Alabama

2 of 20

Nick Saban has already won three BCS national titles (two at Alabama), but that has not prevented him from blowing a short fuse.

Remember when the Tide were obliterating Tennessee on the road, but A.J. McCarron threw an ill-advised pass for an interception in the Vols end zone?

The best coach in America will always make sure his team has his attention, and it always shows. No team is arguably prepared more than Alabama, and the results have been eye-popping in the SEC.

Bobby Petrino, Arkansas

3 of 20

Hopefully Les Miles and Bobby Petrino never sit next to each other at a bar or else it may get ugly. Unless of course they can set aside their difference from last season's matchup.

The shouting match the two had during LSU’s fourth quarter blowout victory was a sight to see. Words were exchanged, and our mothers would not have approved.

Petrino might be my choice in terms of possessing the best offensive mind in the game, and the Razorbacks are on the verge of having three consecutive seasons of threatening for an SEC West crown.

Mark Richt, Georgia

4 of 20

The Bulldogs were worried about the program a bit two seasons ago when they went 6-7, including a bowl loss to Central Florida to cap off a miserable year.

Richt is coming off a solid 10-4 season and his ‘Dawgs are likely to be in the top 10 in the preseason.

However, Richt has thrown a few headsets in his career, and he may go off if his youngsters do not quickly grow up.

I have already labeled UGA as the team to beat in the SEC over consistent and obvious giants such as Alabama and LSU, so time will tell if the former Florida State offensive coordinator can maintain his composure.

Will Muschamp, Florida

5 of 20

"Hey, where's the back judge!?"

Watching the Gators on the ESPN family of networks during last spring was a joy since the cameras were essentially in the faces of the former LSU and Texas defensive coordinator and current head coach Will Muschamp.

Muschamp doesn’t care if you are his team captain or a walk-on freshman, he expects the best each and every single day of practice. He wears his emotions on his sleeve and isn’t afraid to show it.

Steve Spurrier, South Carolina

6 of 20

How could I almost forget Mr. Visor himself, Steve Spurrier?

A legend should go without saying, Spurrier has put South Carolina on the map with consecutive solid seasons (most wins in program history for two year span).

Still, even fans around him act crazy, and whether it is throwing his visor or headset, Spurrier has had one hell of a career thus far.

Dabo Swinney, Clemson

7 of 20

Dabo is never afraid to say what is on his mind, and although he has not been show on the sidelines going bonkers very often, he makes up for it during his halftime and postgame interviews.

If his team played their hearts out, he will undoubtedly make it a big deal, and when his team struggles, he will point that out too. Some argue that he often is your typical too low when you lose and too high when you win, but his Tigers have a ton of talent coming their way to Death Valley to offset Dabo’s pageantry.

Urban Meyer, Ohio State

8 of 20

Urban says he needs to enjoy the game a bit more, but he cannot change who he truly is. The guy was a legend in Gainesville, and he has the ability to quickly bring back the folks from Columbus to the pinnacle of college football.

Urban Meyer is arguably one of the greatest coaches in SEC history (36-12 in six seasons, 32-8 through five), and his presence around the game of college football helps add so much.

Mark Dantonio, Michigan State

9 of 20

After their overtime victory at home against the Irish two years ago, the cardiac kids gave coach a heart attack, and luckily he was able to quickly return to the sidelines.

Dantonio is another one of those fiery coaches that can literally will your team to victory.

When they won arguably the most thrilling game of the 2011 college football season over Wisconsin on a time-expiring Hail Mary, Dantonio jumped in jubilation letting the nation know that his Spartans aren’t going to stop balling anytime soon.

Bo Pelini, Nebraska

10 of 20

The Huskers have had their struggles for the last few seasons with close losses to Oklahoma and Texas before their recent move to the Big Ten.

Bo Pelini is not the man you want to get upset because he will light you up a new one, and he isn’t afraid of making a statement.

It won’t take much to upset the coach, and it would help if his passing attack improves or else he will reach a boiling point in October, again.

Bob Stoops, Oklahoma

11 of 20

Bob Stoops like great coaches will try to work the officials to get his calls, but the Boomer Sooner has gone off on plenty of his players. Whether it is throwing his headset or going bonkers on a few players, coaches and officials, Stoops has had his fair share of short fuses.

Mack Brown, Texas

12 of 20

Mack Brown can really get annoyed with the silly mistakes that his young team has made over the past few seasons, and his halftime interviews are a must-watch.

He will sarcastically throw a jab or two towards his team or perhaps the question asked, and that has a lot to do with his team losing. Worry no more, the Longhorns seem poised to make another run towards a BCS bowl and the short fuses could die down a tad.

Mike Gundy, Oklahoma State

13 of 20

Mike Gundy has a short fuse, and he will forever be remembered by his “I’m a man, I’m 40” press conference in which he rightfully defended his former quarterback Bobby Reid.

Gundy will show his emotions early and often during Big 12 games, and there could finally be some frustration (it was a rarity last year) next season.

Gary Patterson, TCU

14 of 20

Gary Patterson has his famous halftime pep talks on the field before they go to the locker room.

Some love the fact that he gets everything out in the open before they hit the tunnel, and very often the tough love he shows motivates and inspires his team to come out guns blazing.

Jim Mora Jr, UCLA

15 of 20

The Bruins head coach has had a track record of losing his mind on occasion during his Atlanta Falcons days. Now coaching in his first year with UCLA after they went 6-8 will certainly test Mora.

The production from his quarterbacks and receivers have not even been respectable for Bruin standards, and the hope is that they can turn things around quickly before Mora blows too many fuses right off the bat.

Charlie Weis, Kansas

16 of 20

Charlie Weis had his moments at Notre Dame where he ended up going to the BCS twice, but it was all downhill after that.

He let his emotions get the best of him at times, but he was often criticized for not laying down the law enough. Most former professional coaches are usually labeled as such but Weis normally blows a gasket or two every weekend anyway.

Mike London, Virginia

17 of 20

A very successful coach during his time at Richmond (2008-2009), Mike London had a successful first season with the Wahoos.

That said, he would never keeps things too cool and often lets his emotions get the best of him. Officials and players or coaches would often hide on account Virginia was just a game away from reaching the ACC title game.

Rich Rodriguez, Arizona

18 of 20

Rich Rod had a miserable time with Michigan, but that doesn’t mean he cannot get back to his winning ways in Tucson.

Still, the Cats will be in a ton of close games (most likely), and I doubt they will be on the winning side for all of them. Richy will be pleased, but not satisfied, and his face may be bright red on several occasions.

Paul Johnson, Georgia Tech

19 of 20

The Yellow Jackets head coach is fiery coach, and he expects nothing but the best from his program.

Georgia Tech has been so close to becoming an elite team for ACC standards, but since reaching its first-ever BCS trip in 2010, the Yellow Jackets have not been quiet as potent.

Johnson has also been known for using a poor choice of words throughout his team in Atlanta, though he has not been known for ever getting into trouble.

However, his Jackets suffered an abysmal loss to Utah in the Sun Bowl, and they better be ready to get back at it.

Ken Niumatalolo, Navy

20 of 20

A few years back the Midshipmen head coach went off against an official because he thought his team got a raw deal. Still, you will see the Navy coach lose his cool quite a bit throughout the season.
