NFL Combine 2012: 5 Biggest Surprises from Saturday's Workouts

Tony SantorsaJun 7, 2018

With the fourth day of the 2012 NFL combine in the books, we can now look back and analyze the results from Saturday's workouts.

On Saturday in Indianapolis, we saw several offensive linemen and tight ends showcase their skills and attempt to make cases to the NFL scouts watching why they should be drafted this upcoming April—and there were some surprises.

With that being said, let's take a look at the five biggest surprises from Saturday's workouts.

Matt Kalil

1 of 5

Matt Kalil may have been the top-rated offensive tackle coming into Saturday's workouts, but he really solidified himself as quite the talented prospect with tons of upside.

Kalil ran an impressive 4.99 in the 40-yard dash—which is rather surprising to me as he's 305 lbs—as well as bench pressing 30 reps.

You may not think his performance was a surprise, but I am just so surprised at how talented and in shape he really is.

David Molk

2 of 5

Did anyone really know who David Molk was heading into the 2012 NFL combine?

Sure, he may have won the 2011 Rimington Trophy as the nation's top center, but did anyone know how strong he really was?

Well, he recorded 41 reps in the bench press, which is a combine high.

Molk certainly appears to have the strength to block defenders at the next level.

Justin Anderson

3 of 5

Georgia's Justin Anderson really impressed me during his workouts Saturday in Indianapolis.

Anderson may have run a 5.31 40-yard dash, but he bench pressed 32 reps, which was more than this year's top offensive tackle prospect in Matt Kalil.

Anderson may go as a mid-to-late-round draft pick, but he has the potential to be a solid offensive tackle in the NFL.

James Hanna

4 of 5

James Hanna has really emerged as one of the most athletic tight ends that the 2012 draft class has to offer.

The Oklahoma product posted a stellar 4.49 40-yard dash time while posting a 6.76 in the 3-cone drill as well as a 4.11 in the 20-yard shuttle.

Hanna's stock is certainly rising as he successfully displayed his skill set Saturday in Indianapolis.

Orson Charles

5 of 5

Georgia tight end Orson Charles shocked us on two levels: First with an impressive 35 reps in the bench press, but then secondly when he did not participate in any other non-positional drills.

Charles is one of the better tight ends available heading into April, but his freakish strength and his lack of participation are certainly head-scratchers.
