UFC 144: Final Predictions for the Fight Night Bonuses

Jake MartinJun 7, 2018

With UFC 144 only hours away, it's time to predict tonight's biggest winners.

There are so many great fights tonight, but I'm pretty confident in my picks for submission and knockout of the night. In fact, the only real question I have is the fight of the night.

It's down to two fights, really. Will it be Frankie Edgar vs. Benson Henderson or Anthony Pettis vs. Joe Lauzon?

Both fights match up brilliantly with their styles and are sure to be crowd-pleasers, but which fight will get the Fight of the Night Award?

KO of the Night: Quinton Rampage Jackson

1 of 3

Even though Quinton "Rampage" Jackson's motivation for this fight with Ryan Bader is questionable, he will still get a knockout victory.

Do you remember the last time Jackson knocked someone out? It was in 2008, when he knocked out Wanderlei Silva, and quite frankly, that's way too long for Jackson to not have a knockout under his belt.

With Bader's seemingly weak chin and Jackson's legendary power, I think it's time for Jackson to taste victory by way of knockout again.

Motivated or not, Jackson is going to go out there in front of his loyal fanbase and put on a show. In return, he'll receive the Knockout of the Night Award.

Submission of the Night: Jake Shields over Yoshihiro Akiyama

2 of 3

Jake Shields is an outstanding jiu-jitsu practitioner, and it's time for him to get back to his old ways of ending fights by submission.

Shields will look to take the fight against Yoshihiro Akiyama to the ground and put him in some really bad spots. From there, look for Shields to do what he does best, and that's work his jiu-jitsu.

Akiyama showed that he's vulnerable to the submission, when he tapped out to Chris Leben's triangle choke back at UFC 116, and if Shields can get him in the right position, he'll get the Submission of the Night.

Fight of the Night: Anthony Pettis vs. Joe Lauzon

3 of 3

As tempting as Frankie Edgar vs. Benson Henderson is, the Fight of the Night award will go to Anthony Pettis and Joe Lauzon.

Pettis and Lauzon is going to be a barn-burner. Lauzon's standup is steadily improving, and he showed that in his last fight against Melvin Guillard when he dropped him.

Even with Lauzon's much improved standup, look for him to try to take it to the ground. However, I believe Pettis' wrestling skills are good enough to keep it on the feet, and therefore, the fans will get a three-round striking treat.

Pettis should throw unorthodox kicks throughout the fight, while Lauzon tries to put the pressure on him. It's going to be an outstanding fight, and it will ultimately be the best fight on the pay-per view.
