UFC 144 Predictions: Keys to Victory for Anthony Pettis

Matt JuulFeb 25, 2012

Rounding out a stacked, seven fight main card for UFC 144 is an exciting lightweight match-up between former WEC champion Anthony Pettis and veteran Joe Lauzon.

A likely candidate for Fight of the Night, these two contenders are evenly matched in this classic striker versus grappler battle.

While possessing solid jiu-jitsu and submission skills, one of the keys for Pettis is to keep the fight standing as Lauzon is one of the best grapplers in the division.  "Showtime" could certainly put up a fight on the ground, but the risk is too great.

Showing an improved wrestling game in his last outing against Jeremy Stephens, Pettis' work with Bellator champion and former Olympian Ben Askren paid off and will be a big factor in tonight's fight. Staying in the top position on the ground and take down defense will be key.

Standing, Pettis will have to pressure Lauzon from start and use a more refined version of the sprawl and brawl game plan. Stuffing the take downs and countering with technical strikes will completely neutralize Lauzon's attempts to get the fight to the ground.

Looking at Lauzon's last fight against Melvin Guillard, the quick submission came because Guillard was over aggressive and ate a counter left that opened him up to being choked out. Pettis has to be patient and pick his spots and not take Lauzon's striking lightly.

As long as Pettis stays standing and picks Lauzon apart with his superior striking, he should have no trouble securing the win.
