English Premier League: The Biggest Winners and Losers After Saturday's Action

Will ProtheroeFeb 26, 2012

Saturday's Premier League results are now all officially in the books. Who have been the biggest winners and the biggest losers?

Chelsea rose out of their recent slump with a 3-1 victory over Bolton, while Fulham scored a victory over former manager Mark Hughes. Fulham dominated the game but only came away with a single goal.

Terry Connor's reign as Wolves manager got off to a good start with a draw at Newcastle, while Midland rivals Aston Villa struggled for goals yet again in a scoreless draw with Wigan.

West Brom continued their high scoring run with a 4-0 demolition of Sunderland, and Manchester City rounded off the scores with a victory over Blackburn in the late kick-off.

Biggest Winner: Chelsea

Chelsea managed to drag themselves out of their woeful recent form with a 3-0 victory over struggling Bolton.

There were worries after a first half in which the Blues found it hard to create against a well-disciplined Bolton side.

But second half goals from Luiz, Drogba and Lampard eased the pressure slightly on Andre Villas-Boas.

Chelsea now face a crucial March if they are to save their season. They face West Brom and Stoke in the league, with an FA Cup tie against Birmingham sandwiched in between.

Anything less than three wins will not be good enough. They then face Napoli having to overturn a two-goal deficit, before traveling to Man City five days later.

They round off the month with League games against Spurs and Villa, and if things don't go their way, Villas-Boas could be looking for employment in April.

2nd Biggest Winner: Terry Connor

With Wolves' troubled search for a manager now over, they are left with what is, at best, their fourth choice.

With all the drama that has surrounded his appointment, many were predicting an easy victory for Newcastle as they faced Wolves in Connor's first game in charge.

Those predictions looked right on the mark when Newcastle charged into a two-goal lead after just 18 minutes.

In his first halftime team talk, Connor worked wonders, with Wolves coming out with far more purpose.

Kevin Doyle starred, setting up the first goal for Matt Jarvis and netting the equalizer himself.

Connor will be hoping for more of the same when they face Fulham next Sunday.

Biggest Loser: Aston Villa

3 of 4

Aston Villa fans were treated to another dismal performance by their team. This time they were lucky to come away with a point after being dominated by bottom of the table Wigan.

For long stretches of the match, Villa were completely unable to get control of the ball and it was lucky for them that Wigan could not convert their possession into goalscoring opportunities.

Robbie Keane now departs back for Los Angeles, and Villa are looking worryingly thin up front.

The team also lost Darren Bent, who was stretchered off with an injured ankle. The Villains will be hoping that Bent will not be out for too long.

With Alex McLeish again being booed off the pitch by the Villa fans, his job may start coming under question from owner Randy Lerner. The biggest question for Lerner has to be, who else is there?

2nd Biggest Loser: Sunderland

4 of 4

Sunderland's resurgence under Martin O'Neill suffered an abrupt setback as they were taken apart by West Brom, losing the game 4-0.

Despite this setback, the Black Cats are having an excellent season and the scoreline was harsh on a team who didn't play badly enough to deserve losing by four goals.

A win for Sunderland would have put them into eighth, but hopes of qualifying for Europe are now faint.
