NFL Combine 2012 Results: 5 Surprising Notes from Friday
The 2012 NFL Scouting Combine is officially up to cruising speed, as Saturday brings with it the last group of players arriving in Indianapolis and the first group of players hitting the field for workouts when the tight ends and offensive linemen take part in drills.
There have been more than a few surprises so far at Lucas Oil Stadium, and here's a look back at some of the big developments at Lucas Oil Stadium on Friday.
Alshon Jeffery Shows Up Fit and Trim
1 of 5South Carolina wide receiver Alshon Jeffery was one of the most talked-about players at his position entering the 2012 combine, as there had been rampant speculation that the 6'3" wideout's weight had ballooned into the 240-pound range.
However, Jeffery weighed in at the combine at only 216 pounds, down 13 pounds from his listed playing weight at South Carolina. If the Gamecocks standout can show that he didn't sacrifice strength to drop the weight and runs a solid 40-yard dash, he should greatly increase the odds that he's a first-round pick in April's NFL draft.
Mike Adams Depresses on the Bench Press
2 of 5Ohio State offensive tackle Mike Adams was a sturdy performer during his time in Columbus, and it was believed that the 6'7", 323-pound Adams had a good shot at being a first-round selection in the 2012 NFL draft.
Those chances were dealt a blow on Friday when Adams managed only 19 reps on the bench press, which may raise a red flag with some NFL squads in regards to Adams' strength.
Orson Charles Shows Up Big
3 of 5Tight end Orson Charles of the University of Georgia showed up at the combine 10 pounds heavier than the 241 pounds he was listed at with the Bulldogs, and apparently every ounce that Charles added was muscle.
Charles bench-pressed 225 pounds a remarkable 35 times, a fantastic display of strength that was nine reps more than any other tight end and more than all but one offensive lineman.
Ladarius Green Is a Bust on the Bench
4 of 5Louisiana-Lafayette tight end Ladarius Green is an athletic receiver but at only 238 pounds, many pundits have questioned whether Green needs to add bulk to his frame to be an effective blocker in the National Football League.
Green did nothing to alleviate those fears on Friday, as the senior managed only 16 reps on the bench press (the second-lowest total at his position), which should only serve to raise even more red flags about his strength (or lack thereof).
Tebow Fever May Have Broken
5 of 5As is the case every season, not every development at the combine has to do with the new kids working out, and this year one of the big "side" stories regards last season's most talked-about player.
Denver Broncos executive vice president of football operations John Elway is in Indianapolis for the combine, presumably to scout quarterbacks as the Broncos are widely expected to add a pair through free agency and/or the draft.
Elway was his useful semi-evasive self when asked about Tim Tebow's future as the starting quarterback in Denver, stating that "we're hoping he's going to be the guy for a long, long time." When being asked what sort of player the Broncos might be looking for as a backup signal caller Elway remarked, "One like Tim."
Ringing endorsement that is.
