2012 NFL Free Agent Predictions: Matt Flynn Will Find Familiarity in South Beach

Jeff ChaseFeb 24, 2012

In a strange way, one of the biggest names to hit the free-agency market this offseason will be Green Bay Packers backup quarterback Matt Flynn. When he finally does, he will have his pick—unless he is tagged—and no team will fit his skill set better than the Miami Dolphins.

Why South Beach? Well, first and foremost, former Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin is now running the show, and it was under his offense that Flynn found his success and potential.

While he may want to prove that he can succeed elsewhere, there is no better situation for him than to play under the system that he is familiar with. It has the potential to make him look his best.

The Dolphins obviously are not the Packers, but they actually have a lot of really nice options on offense. They have receivers like Brandon Marshall, Davon Bess and Brian Hartline, as well as running back Reggie Bush who can make things happen coming out of the backfield.

One thing the team has really lacked is a quarterback. Although many thought Chad Henne was that guy, backup quarterback Matt Moore made him look useless as he won all six games for the team after Henne failed to do anything in the offense over his first four starts.

Now imagine that same team, but with a quarterback like Flynn under center.

While it isn't a guarantee, Flynn has shown a lot of promise when he has been given the chance. Last season in Week 17, the team let Aaron Rodgers rest and gave Flynn the nod. He took the chance, and he ran with it.

He threw for 480 yards on 31-of-44 attempts with six touchdowns and just one interception. While yes, this was just a single game, Flynn did this under Philbin and one can only assume that he could potentially find that same success yet again in South Beach.

Obviously he won't be putting up those numbers weekly, but he should be able to play at a high level given the familiarity with the system from the start.

Should the Dolphins decide to pass on Flynn, or if it is the other way around, the team will have to find another option. Still, Flynn and the Dolphins both seem to have the most to gain from one another in this potential relationship.
