2012 NFL Draft: Ryan Tannehill and Reaches Who Won't Pay Off

Alex KayJun 3, 2018

Every season, without a doubt, a number of teams will reach on prospects that have upside and promise but barely any body of work on the field.

Here’s a look at three players who are sure to go too early and have a small chance of actually panning out.

Ryan Tannehill

Tannehill is getting far too much hype and respect, and in turn his draft stock is skyrocketing.

The reason for this is that a number of teams are so desperate for a quarterback and are willing to overlook that this draft only goes two deep at the position for sure-thing prospects.

The Texas A&M signal-caller is nothing but upside and he’s a huge gamble anywhere inside the first round.

He’s only been playing the position for a year and a half and his inability to perform at the combine is troubling, to say the least.

Quinton Coples

Coples had a terrible season down at UNC and never became the breakout defensive stud he was supposed to in 2011.

He then half-heartedly tried to make up for it by playing one good game in the Senior Bowl.

According to Jim Corbett of USA Today, Coples said, "I had a great Senior Bowl. I went there and showed I could compete at the highest level. I heard the rumors and and all the things that were going on that I didn't play hard."

It’s insane to think this kid really feels he proved his doubters wrong by having a decent exhibition game.

He’s got the size and strength to be successful in the NFL, but his head is clearly in the wrong place and he’ll never be a good pro until he can figure out his consistency issues.

Michael Brockers

Brockers is a known project, as he is 22 years old and has just two years of actual playing time at LSU behind him.

However, his weight gain without working out at the combine is puzzling.

He’s reportedly up to 322 pounds now but did not bench or run the 40.

It’s clear this kid has the right body type for a DT at the next level, but his inexperience and youth may hamstring him if he lands on the wrong team.
